Fly fishing on the camino

I've seen a few locals flyfishing in towns along the Camino and I'm surprised you don't see it more. There are a number of beautiful rivers full of large fish that you can see from the bridge. I thought about taking my Tenkara rod, as it's lightweight and easy to pack.

I'm sure it's possible. Quite a lot of fishing club notices and "catch and release" signs near bridges along the Camino Frances suggesting fishing is popular. I haven't walked the Norte but I can't see why it should be any different. Just don't try it in St Jean Pied de Port: the river is teeming with big trout but they are treated like pets with children feeding them from the bridge by the church. Anyone fishing there is likely to end up swimming with them very soon :-) :-)

We spoke to a young Frenchman who said he regularly fly fished near SJPDP and we also saw a fly fisherman landing a fish as we walked the stretch past Larrasoana. We stayed in a little place on the river near there and observed the fishermen coming in for a license and a shot of liquor before they headed out for the morning's fishing.

My husband fly fishes and wished for his Tenkara rod several times. I am sure he would have happily paid the license fee.

That's so funny... I think I have that exact photo.

I'm looking for my version of this scene on the river leaving Orbigo and will post it when I find it.

You know, it's not like a small baggie with line, hooks and a couple of flies weighs anything... tie it onto the trekking pole. I might do a little catch and release this year.
