Flight change! Evening transport from Madrid to Belorado?

Hello Camino friends.

I’ve just received the dreaded flight change email from RyanAir.

We’re flying Manchester to Madrid, 21st May this year. Our flight was due to arrive around noon, and we then had plenty of time to reach Belorado, from where we’ll walk the next day

They’ve changed the flight so it now lands at 4:10pm (presuming no delays).

Do you know of a way for us still to reach Belorado that night?

Can you think of other, perhaps better options for us to reach our starting point? We wouldn’t mind flying to a different airport if flights are running, for example. When I booked this flight there were very few flights to the north of spain from north west England: it’s very restrictive. Or maybe there are late buses, trains or car option which I couldn’t find on Rome2Rio?

RyanAir are asking me to confirm or cancel I’ll really appreciate help before I decide what to do.

Thanks in advance!

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Bilbao is only about 130 km from Belorado, but I dont know if Ryan Air flies there. One idea would be to get a bus from Bilbao to Burgos (Rome2Rio shows one at 3, 4:15 and 6 pm), then connect to local bus, or get a taxi for the last 50 km to Belorado, that might.

I don’t think you can get there from Madrid if you arrive at 4:10, but you might be able to get to Burgos, spend the night there, and then the next day head to Belorado and just start walking when you get there. I’m assuming you don’t have the luxury of taking an extra day to get there. Hope you work it out, buen camino, Laurie

I sympathize, been there done that several times, and this seems to be the norm these days rather than the exception.

Can you cancel and get a full refund?

If so, before you do that, check out all your other options of getting to Belorado.

A completely different route and time may suit you better. Good luck!

If time is of the essence, fly with Easy jet direct to Bilbao and take a cab circa $100 directly to Santa Domingo della Calzada or Belorado.

Oh I’ll get there one way or another 😃. The whole route is booked—I have to book rooms well ahead because of medical problems—and there’s no way I’m cancelling the whole thing unless there’s a crisis!

I looked at EasyJet to Bilbao but ruled it out because it arrives even later. I didn’t know a cab would be so reasonable so will look into this. Thanks.

A friend of mine travelling in Spain exclusively used BlaBaCar and swore by it. It may be an easy way to take Laurie's suggestion and head to Burgos.Moving between two big cities you're sure to get a ride. Then taxi to Belorado? I dont know how far in advance you can book a trip though.

I have good experience with BlaBlaCar myself on the Camino. Great way of cheap and fast transport. Travel this way to Burgos or take an ALSA-bus. See bus schedules Madrid airport T4-Burgos on website www.ALSA.ES

In Burgos: take the Jimenez-bus (Route Burgos-Logrono stops in Belorado) see shedules on https://taquilla.jimenezmovilidad.es/# (the shedule for the month may will be shown in a few weeks, it's to early now)

I travelled this way on 2 camino-trips

I didn’t know about BlaBlaCar! What a brilliant thing that seems to be. I just checked today’s availability for Madrid to Burgos and found several options, all cheap. Nothing for the section to Belorado but as you said, I might manage a bus or taxi for that section, or at worst stay in Burgos instead.

I must thank @peregrina2000 too, because I somehow missed her very helpful post when I read responses earlier.

My quotes for taxis from Bilbao to Belorado are all over €200, btw. Most are around €230, and I could hire a car for about the same.

Just take a hotel in Burgos and the earliest Jimenez-bus the next day . Bus 7.30 arrives in Belorado at 8.15. and you can start walking. Many people will start at the same time.

Yes we may have to do that. We’ve booked into the lovely Hostal B in Belorado, and I have an ongoing conversation with them because we ended there last September, and they were great in looking for my lost ring for me. We thought it’d be great to begin from there this year—picking up exactly where we left off, and supporting lovely people—but I suppose if we have to cancel then so be it.

After staying in Belorago 2 days later I got a train from Burgos to direct to Madrid. You will definitely be able to get a bus from Burgos to Belorado or if the timing doesn't work then get a quote for a taxi. Ryanair definitely flies into Bilbao although getting from there to Belorado could be challenging. Good luck.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Buses run from Madrid to Burgos several times per day. I think the carrier is ALSA and they have a website. The local bus (leaving from the same bus station as where ALSA would be arriving) runs from Burgos to Logrono right along the camino route for the most part. Rome2Rior often doesn't have access to the smaller public bus line schedules. Good luck.

I also have used Blabar car from Bilbao to Pamplona. These days, though... not unless I could be sure of the vaccination and covid status of the driver and other passengers.
I am sure you have looked at Rome2rio.. here is a screenshot of the time from M to B. Depending on the days or weeks you have before flying, you can explore times of buses and then from Burgos to Belorado.
You are almost there!
And the ring? Did you get it back? This reminds me of the story, a little boy rushes in to the classroom on the first day after the Christmas holidays: Hey! Miss! Any word about that pair that was lookin' fur a hoose?👣👣

There might be a flight to La Coruna then take a taxi to Belorado. I flew to L C in '19 then took a taxi to Ferrol.

An update! My partner has managed to book an extra day off work, so we’ve simply shifted the flight forward by one day; I hadn’t thought this would be possible because he’s already at the limit if his holiday allowance, but nice companies do exist, it seems!

I now have a choice of options for getting from Madrid to Belorado the following day, the Saturday. We’ll land in Madrid on the Friday at 13:45, so have a little time there albeit not much to see such a huge city.

So, my question now is, where in Madrid would you stay for the Friday night, before heading on to Belorado the next day?

From what I can see, the direct Madrid>Belorado Jiménez bus leaves from a suburb north of the city, on Avenida de America, at around 3pm. And there is the train via Burgos option too of course.

We will see a little of Madrid on the way back too, because I’ve booked a nice hotel in the centre for then. I want to keep costs a bit lower for this unforeseen extra night at the start.

If you don’t want to get into the central Puerta del Sol area, I would consider staying north a bit. There are some really nice neighborhoods there, which are close to the Avenida de América bus station (called an intercambiador because there are so many connections).

This is not a suburb, it is actually a fairly central location in Madrid, north of the historic core.

Do you want a more residential area? Would you want to go to a museum? Spain's premier impressionist, Sorolla, has a museum in his former home/studio, which is a lovely place. And it's in a very nice residetial area.

Or, going a bit further south but staying north of Sol, there is the Salamanca neighborhood, which is contiguous to the Retiro, which would be a terrific place to spend a few hours. One of the world's great parks.
