Planning Sept 2014
Hi everyone,

Hoping for a little advice! We set off today from Santiago for our walk to Finisterre - heading to Lucia first and finishing at 'the end of the world'. We planned to spend 2 nights when we got to finisterre at the end, but spoke to some folk yesterday who went on a bus trip and said finisterre town was pretty horrible and didn't offer very much. Our other option is to have 2 nights in Muxia and then walk for a day to finisterre afterwards...

If anyone has any thoughts, advice or helpful info to help us decide we would be most grateful!

Thanks!

Based on my own experience I would opt for your second choice. Muxia is a beautiful town with many fine restaurants and hotels, people are friendly and helpful. The walk between there and Finisterra is lovely even though I walked the opposite way. You can stop off mid point at Lires or walk the whole way in a day. Finisterra is worth a visit even if just to visit the Lighthouse but it is definitely more commercialised.

I fall in the Muxia camp. I found it delightful, but it was before the church caught fire. My suggestion would be to walk to Muxia then walk to Finisterre stopping off at Lires for the night. The buses from Finisterre are more frequent than the ones from Muxia. Do book a bus when you arrive in Finisterre (at a shop across the square from the bus stop) as they can fill up. Buen Camino.

My first Camino I bussed to Finisterre and walked to the lighthouse, my second Camino I walked to Finisterre and walked 4 days in the rain ,and the walk there is beautiful, but town itself a bit too commercial and crowded. This year I only went to Muxia, BLISS , quiet, peaceful, one little gift shop, good food ,beautiful views and Bela Muxia hotel/albergue the best! After one can walk to Little Fox and spend 5 days there as well!

Hi,
I walked to Finisterre first, less than two weeks ago. It rained most of the time and the downhill into Cee is brutal. That said, I enjoyed the walk out to the light house and a view of the Atlantic shared by many since time immemorial. There was a strong storm and, had I faced directly into the wind, I may not have shaved for the next two days.;)
The trek to Muxia is a treat and the town, small, but welcoming.
I spent three days at the Little Foxes about 17km outside town. Quiet, well appointed and the food solid with a local taste. Make sure Tracy has a lot of wine. Also, if you like rum...that's a special request.
All the best and Buen "extended" Camino,

Arn

Muxia gets my vote too :)

Definitely visit Finisterre and walk out to the lighthouse, but when I was there last year at the end of my first camino it was a little too busy for my liking whereas Muxia provided a relaxing and calm haven, with lovely beaches and friendly locals. I stayed at the Bela Muxia albergue which was a very modern and clean albergue and it was possible to stay more than 1 night.

Enjoy!

I walked from Santiago to Muxia and then onto Finisterre and back to Santiago this August after completing the Camino Ingles.
I loved both towns but Muxia was nicer in my eyes because it was less commercial.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Muxia all the way. Make your way to the point, where the church recently burned, sit on the rocks and meditate at sundown. Have diner at A de Lolo, which is also a family run hotel.

This being said, you will always be curious about "the end of the world", so bus it, walk to the faro, have a seafood lunch and leave. (Try the percebes: ugly as can be but oh so delicious!) I got there on a Sunday, with all the tourist buses! It was such a disapointed to be swormed but so many loud people when you are living a special moment, and to see the tourist shop that sells dead blowfish and conges. Perhaps if I had been there midweek my experience would have been different?

Also, in all fairness, I am told it has some beautiful and very long beaches where very few people go. There is also a very modern cemetary on the road up to the faro, facing the see. Magnificent site. It was designed by a well know architect but the people from the town have never used it, prefering to be burried in the traditional cemetary by the church.

I am in the Fisterra camp, but only because I fell in love with the relaxation there and didn't actually end up going to Muxia, I will go next time.
I loved the Beaches, and I was there during a particularly busy time (just after St. James Day). The main beach was a beautiful and warm place to swim (remember, summer) and the walk from Santiago to Fisterra was lovely. We swam, relaxed in a private apartment, we watched the sunset at the Lighthouse, and at one of the beaches which faced the sunset. All of it was gorgeous and we were surrounded by the many Camino Familia we'd made along the way.
