There is to be a demonstration in Santiago on Sunday concerning an environmental catastrophe has already been approved by the government. It will unearth millions of tons of gold. It will create 500 jobs initially in its construction and then 250 within the mine itself. It will be exhausted within 8 years. It will also destroy a pristine area of farmland and mountain forests, it will heap cyanide and arsenic into a wetland basin, and it will contaminate a beautiful river estuary flowing into the Atlantic. The company approved to exploit this pristine area is Canadian.
So am I.

It has to be stopped and needs international backing. I'll be there adding my two centimos worth. Sometimes being a published writer does carry a bit of weight! I invite you to join me if you will be there. Send me a PM or look for a feisty blondish woman wielding a sign with a Canadian flag on it at the Alameda at 12:00.

The last is in Spanish but the message is clear enough.

Although this mine itself is about 40 klms from the Camino at Muxia the gold itself stretches in a seam from Malpica to Tuy! Other "exploitaciónes" are planned for the future.

Don't let Galicia be sold for gold!

hahaha! Thanks Sojourner. Ounces of course. I think I got carried away! Anyway, it's a helluva lot but in microparticles so that it has to be extracted using cyanide. It is also accompanied by arsenic which, as I understand it, will be released into the area with the explosions. It's a very real threat which has already been approved by the government. Most of the locals knew next to nothing about it! You can read more on my blog if you like. I am certainly no expert in matters like this but I am trying to get as much information as I can.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
