Enormous Camino (Francés) Mosaic at Poio Monastery

Today at Poio Monastery on the first day of the Variante Espiritual, I saw a huge and impressive mosaic celebrating various locations on the Camino Francés. It was designed by Czech artist Antoine Machourek and created from 1989-92 (unfortunately he died in 1991, before it was completed). The mosaic is 80 metres in length, going around three sides of one of the monastery cloisters, and contains 1 million tesserae.

It’s on the main route so I was surprised that I couldn’t find a previous post here about the mosaic. The monastery was interesting for other reasons as well so for €2 it’s definitely worth going into.
