The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

I think this is just as bad as the people who scrawl their names on the mojones or otherwise deface the camino. And in this case it’s even a bit worse because it’s all about the money, the monetization, the ads on his site. I hope his fans will let him know what they think of this little trick!
What you said - more eloquently than I, as always.

I was just considering how to articulate my reaction to this. But you’ve said it perfectly @peregrina2000 🙏

His early vids were fantastic, commercialisation has taken over not a good look, in fact a turn off but it takes all sorts.
Waiting for his skateboard camino, only joking Efren. 😄😄😄

I am reminding myself to be respectful … but, people seeking to make a living in this way bother me. If you are operating a drone near me - I leave. You are interfering with my peaceful experience and the commercial aspect…don’t get me started. I don’t actually think they know how offensive this is to some of us. It maybe a generational thing, but I don’t think I am getting onboard.

In fairness to Efren, maybe it was a one off.
That's exceedingly generous. You don't get QR stickers made up to put around the countryside as a one-off. Whether he is personally responsible for this or someone did it on his behalf, I still see this as defacing an otherwise useful sign. It's not massive as things to get concerned about go, but annoying that someone thinks it is okay to advertise by defacing other's signs.

Not exactly smart marketing either.
His website is all about guided Camino tours.
Those who see the QR code sticker are already walking their own Camino

I'll just say this...QR codes are here to stay; all types and for all reasons of use. When restaurants use them and when dining out el fresco I don't appreciate looking at the menu on my phone in the sun and I also need my reader glasses.
I personally don't fault Efren. 8x10" taxi and albergue services are certainly more of an eyesore, but we have no problem with those because they help us. Maybe they should use QR stickers instead; much less messy and graffiti looking...I wish him well.
As for burning his clothing on his first Camino, it was a pair of underpants. He was ignorant, so I give him the benefit of the doubt, but I am a fan.
Btw, it doesn't cost anything to look at his website, just like it doesn't cost us anything on Ivar's, unless we chose to donate. Youtubers hope to make a living from it and I don't mind.

You make good points Chrissy 🙏 There are plenty of good people making a living from the camino, and to the benefit / enjoyment of walkers. That doesn’t bother me. And I know that many people enjoy Efren’s videos. It’s the QR stickers and graffiti that irk me! I very much appreciate your perspective 🙏

The Caminos have long outgrown their early non-commercial, voluntary and mostly donativo character. There is clearly a need for privately-run businesses to cater for the many thousands walking today. But I can't help feeling that there is a significant difference between local people advertising practical services like albergues, bars and so on which are of immediate value to those walking a Camino and the posting of advertisements for personal promotional websites with at best a marginal and tangential benefit to those pilgrims on the ground.

Agree totally Laurie but his fans probably don't care, they are so enthusiastic about his vlogs etc.

Poor old Efren...a bit like Marmite. You either love him or hate him. When it comes to Marmite (and Brocolli too) I sit in the latter category but have absolutely no problem with those that think differently.
I have no need to talk about my prejudices nor qualify my reasons...i just pass them both by. I live and let live.
I have no doubt that Efren works hard, maximises his talent and provides for himself and family. A stage of life that many of this forum have passed. There are many other ways that people make their living that I find objectionable; even abhorrent.
As Trecile has described it...a "tiny sticker". I had to expand the thumbnail and then expand it further to see what was causing the problem.
When the conversation discusses "money, monetization and ads" as a reason to criticise i become uncomfortable.

So who was the witness who saw Efren place the sticker there and can assure all of us it wasnt a zealous fan of his with some extra time and money... Or pwrhaps one of his sponsors trying to make an extra buck... Yes i hate the stickers and bad graffiti as much as everyone, but jumping to conclusions abot a great Camino promoter is not a good look!!

I have no problem with Efren making money off the camino - he is one of many in that regard. He’s up front about it, so we all know that earning a living from his videos is his goal, that’s fine! Based on the videos I’ve seen he is a likeable, earnest, talented guy, no different than many other talented people who make money on the Camino in different ways.

I think that those of us who don’t like these QR codes are just reacting to the way it adds to the junkifying of the camino. The fact that it’s a QR code rather than a scrawled efrengonzalez.com makes it less intrusive and obvious but it’s still just adding to the visual mess. And I think it also makes a statement about the person planting those codes — that somehow this person has a right to spread the word about himself wherever he feels like it. (I find it hard to envision how this could be the work of anyone other than Efren himself, but nothing is impossible, I suppose). At least all those taxi stickers placed on the back of traffic signs are offering a service, but that’s very different than just saying hey look at my great vlogs!

The fact that we have all learned to use QR codes (anyone who went to Spain during the height of covid had a baptism by fire!) or the fact that many enterprises use QR codes on their websites or at their place of business doesn’t mean that anyone anywhere should now be able to place his or her QR code on any flat surface that presents itself. At least that’s how I see it.

Ah, well, this is probably like complaining about toilet paper on the camino, or bag rustling in albergues - it’s not going to change anyone’s behavior, but it is a bit cathartic!

While I totally agree with the sentiment, the Camino (Francis in particular) was commercialized a long time ago...
Granted this adds to it , not excusing it but come on - selling beads and gourds and pins and bandanas and using "Free Stamps" to attract walkers so they can sell something. It's like walking around Niagara Falls sometimes.
Where there are people, then there is money where there's money then there are businesses seeking to capitalize....i.e. at the pilgrim office in SDC where you can pay for getting their diploma in Latin!
There are lines and there are lines...

I look upon this not with disdain, as Efren has provided me with many hours of enjoyment as he walks many different Caminos, rather, one small sticker, which has a limited life on a sign, which already is providing specific information to los mochileros, but can provide help to many as they go on their way.

Efren funds his trips through many means, as would anyone who pursues their hobby or business, or livelihood.

I, for one, do not put him down for this.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
I've been a big fan of Efren's vlogs, especially his earlier walks. I thought it was awesome his fans would send in donations for him along the way so he could get an albergue or even a meal. He would give credit to those who donated along with a price breakdown of the daily cost. Also, the drone work is spectacular, those views, wow!

Unfortunately, as time went on my admiration for him dwindled. After realizing his fans are paying for his huge adventures, Mt Everest comes to mind, and his new equipment, too much to mention, and now he is charging an outrageous price to be a tour guide on the Frances. I did post a comment on his page that yes, his prices were extremally high for a Camino Frances pilgrimage. But as you can imagine, he already knows that. Now his Instagram shows posts from the May Camino he walked with the eagerly paying newbies, I believe five in total. Not a bad haul for a months walk. I'm hoping they realized along the way, they could have walked entirely independent and saved a whole lot of dough. What a shame or should I say sham.

Signed,
No longer a fan. :(

My comment on the QR code stickers along the way: Too much is too much. It's all an eye sore.

I don't know who Efren is and have no comment on him. But if you feel there is nothing wrong with putting stickers where you wish, then you should have no problem with people removing them, or placing another sticker over it. If it is useful or provides a benefit is not important. I don't expect there are any laws regulating who's sticker can't be covered or removed, and don't expect there are any rules about putting them there in the first place.
I just recall what it looks like in big citys where they plaster adds all over power poles, abandoned buildings, etc. When does it stop even if it is very small for now.

I wish him well too. I don't understand the negativity. I don't plan to use his services because I plan to walk under my own steam but I don't feel the same sense of exasperation about him as others. What he does in his spare time has zero impact on my life. There are many people, even on this forum, who make money from the Camino, whether it's providing guided tours, or monetising their youtube channel or blog, selling their books (fiction and non fiction) - I wish them well too! It's a much happier way to live having a mindset of acceptance and tolerance than getting vexed over the small things.

I could not agree more.
It would seem that one mention of the "Ef word" seems to instigate a collective nervous breakdown in some.
I may feel that the labels are ill judged and of limited effectiveness as far as he is concerned but I cannot waste any more oxygen on this issue. The over commercialisation of some of the camino routes is a,horse that left the stable long ago.
When it comes to the spoiling of these routes I prefer to concentrate on the "Turdtowns" established and signposted by the white and brown bunting, not appearing on any Brierley map. No wonder the water in some areas is not fit for human consumption.
Or perhaps the 12 bin bags of litter filled in one 3k stretch.
Efren can hardly be blamed for this.

Curious that my recent reply to this was deleted. I was an Efren fan early as I found his videos were informative. I commented on one of his posts when his efforts turned to be more commercial only to have his father threaten me online with physical harm. That’s where I drew the line.

You must not have completed your previous response as there is no record of you posting on this thread previously. (Moderators can see posting history, including deleted posts)
If it truly was his father who threatened you that's shocking. A while ago an imposter joined the forum using Efrén's name. I was able to contact the real Efrén and he told me that he has never been a member of this forum, so be wary of imposters.

I will PM you to keep details out of the public, but I did my homework to verify who it was. It was unnerving, to say the least. The post in reference was when Efren was exploring developing virtual reality "tours" of various Camino routes, and my comment was that this may take away from the "original feeling" one has when they walk the Camino in person. I didn;t think the comment was offensive but a provocation of how some efforts can be helpful and others perhaps not.

I could have sworn I saw Efren post a few years ago and reply to a few comments. I’m almost positive he’s been a member of the forum.

Edit* welp it could have been the imposter? But it was well before he “biznified” himself.

I'm pretty sure it was the imposter you are recalling. I, too, had emailed the "real" Efren after several bizarre posts came through, and he said he has never been a member of this forum.

He's an entrepreneur... He can only charge what people will pay... Do, or did, you work for as little money and as much philanthropy toward others your whole life? Hes got a family and pretyy significant costs... You think he's outrageous, check what it would cost to get a tour company to pgysically accompany you ...

Yes, he is now, and his past career was as a professional videographer employed by others. He left it to start doing videos of his own trips and in the process fell in love with the Caminos like many of us on this forum have done.

He also provides much more than complainers are giving credit for. Gear reviews, and links to places to acquire that gear; GPS tracks with minute detail about where things like bars, fountains, shaded paths etc. are located. Footage from lesser walked paths (giving people a sense of whethere such paths might be possible for them… and maybe diverting some traffic from the CF).
Few people here are grumpy about the impact of Brierley on increasing demand; fewer still ever moan about what The Way has done…
Efrén is the grandson of a Galician… he more than many has some “claim” more on par with the locals who make a living and advertise with signs and stickers along the way. His drone footage is always away from other pilgrims unless they are actively engaged in the material (waving, singing…).
He has a family to feed, and does not want to shoot commercials in Miami anymore.
I have asked him a few times for practical advice about a trail, or about gear, and he is very generous With information.
Also… has anyone noticed that Ivar has a drone now?
…crickets…

Of course you are right but that is totally irrelevant to the discussion.

I don’t know how anyone reading this thread can think that anyone is objecting to people who make a living from the Camino. We are talking about litter and defacement on the Camino. Ivar has not gone up and down the camino planting QR codes on signs or anywhere else.

We are not responsible for the behaviour of our family members.
Threatening behaviour should be reported to authorities, not used to besmirch the character of those to whom they are related.
As the daughter of a convicted felon, I’ve dealt with too many people who treated *me* as though his character flaws, various threats, etc., were somehow mine to control.
That said, I am a big fan of his VR efforts. So far: much superior to the usual, and they communicated to my mobility impaired, house-bound mother, an immersive beauty that she had not imagined. I have video of her watching the VR material from Efren and her delight is contagious.
Not everything about the camino is aimed at those who will walk… no more than the long form photographic essay in the NYT today is about the Shikoku is intended as a guide only for those who will go.

I saw a tiny sticker with a QR code on a sign as I was leaving Oviedo. As I am curious person I had to scan it. It was a link to Efrén González's website. 🙄

It’s just a sticker. It’ll fall off and disintegrate with the rain. Don’t worry yourselves about it. We are all people just doing what we can to live. ❤️

I think I remember that Efren burned his clothes at Finisterre and took some/a lot (?) of grief for it. If anyone has contact info for him, I would send him a respectful note about this latest caper.

@trecile, have you seen more of these QR codes? In fairness to Efren, maybe it was a one off. Checking his youtube channel, I see he walked the Primitivo in 2021.
Last I heard, he was taking a group of people "as a guide"(for a fee) on the camino.
He was planning a Camino in Japan, and was going to use a regular scooter (not an electric one).

I agree with this comment. Been watching Efren since 2017. He provides tons of valuable content, has worked hard to get where he is, and loves his job.

It also sort of blows my mind that a QR code gets people worked up. I saw plenty of QR codes for albergues, taxis, menus while on my last Camino. Guess what I did? I just kept walking, thinking about my next cafe con leche.

I reserve the right to get pissed off about anything I want. QR codes, large guided tours, even convertible pants. Sometimes it even gives me pleasure. So don't judge us judgers.

Isn't he someone that promotes the Camino de Santiago and many other routes? He gave up his previous job to dedicate himself to this as a way of making a living as well as helping provide information for other pilgrims and travellers who may be thinking of embarking on the route.
I don't consider his sticker to be anyway offensive nor comparable with graffiti/scrawl found on the Camino.
Would you say the same about Spanish taxi services that plaster their advertising or contact details in several places along the Camino? What you call monetizing, for others is how they make a living and support their families. What's wrong with that?

Curmudgeons of the world... Unite! 🤣
Bloody humans everywhere doing things differently than me! The cheek of it!

I think the important words here are "tiny sticker" and "curious"....not offended or angry...just curious. Once that curiosity has been satisfied then the usual negativity aimed at one individual begins.
I doubt that I am alone in feeling there is a lot of double standards and unfairness on display on this thread.
Yes I’m surprised at the negativity directed at Efren 🥲 He’s entertained many with his magnificent drone photography and happy personality. Give it a break please, time to shut it down 👣👣

Great, stay pissed off-doesn’t matter to me. Also, know the difference between a judgement and opinion.

Differing opinions about QR stickers aside, this post really made me laugh. I think it may be one of my favourites on the forum for some time, perhaps a close second behind this from a while ago.

I think I recall who posted this the first time I saw it here. But I could be wrong so won’t attribute that to anyone in particular.

On a more serious note, for me this discussion has opened my mind to other perspectives. I think I will be able to walk by QR stickers with little or no visceral reaction in the future. Though I imagine graffiti will still irk me 😎

My chuckle muscles got a workout also.
These weren't any ordinary QR codes...these were Efren Gonzalez QR codes.

I don't know if little QR code stickers really bother me. I guess it depends if they're defacing things in a way that could be seen as litter or graffiti.

But the drones! 🤬! Some of you know that I'm a landscape painter, and I've been buzzed by drones frequently. When they buzz me, I wish I had some sort of weapon to shoot them down.

I have to admit sometimes the drone videos (Efren is good) I've seen are gorgeous, but I think overall they actually shouldn't be allowed, except for military or emergency situations.
