What you said - more eloquently than I, as always.I think this is just as bad as the people who scrawl their names on the mojones or otherwise deface the camino. And in this case it’s even a bit worse because it’s all about the money, the monetization, the ads on his site. I hope his fans will let him know what they think of this little trick!
I was just considering how to articulate my reaction to this. But you’ve said it perfectly @peregrina2000I think this is just as bad as the people who scrawl their names on the mojones or otherwise deface the camino. His early vids were fantastic, commercialisation has taken over not a good look, in fact a turn off but it takes all sorts.Like a dog peeing on a lamppost but rather more persistent...
I am reminding myself to be respectful … but, people seeking to make a living in this way bother me. If you are operating a drone near me - I leave. You are interfering with my peaceful experience and the commercial aspect…don’t get me started. I don’t actually think they know how offensive this is to some of us. It maybe a generational thing, but I don’t think I am getting onboard. His early vids were fantastic, commercialisation has taken over not a good look, in fact a turn off but it takes all sorts.
Waiting for his skateboard camino, only joking Efren.

That's exceedingly generous. You don't get QR stickers made up to put around the countryside as a one-off. Whether he is personally responsible for this or someone did it on his behalf, I still see this as defacing an otherwise useful sign. It's not massive as things to get concerned about go, but annoying that someone thinks it is okay to advertise by defacing other's signs. In fairness to Efren, maybe it was a one off.

I have seen more than one of his QR code stickers - along with those from other enterprises.@trecile, have you seen more of these QR codes? In fairness to Efren, maybe it was a one off. Checking his youtube channel, I see he walked the Primitivo in 2021.
Me too. We saw a few QR stickers on the Baztan recently. Not much ‘passing trade’ there.I have seen more than one of his QR code stickers - along with those from other enterprises.
You make good points Chrissy There are plenty of good people making a living from the camino, and to the benefit / enjoyment of walkers. That doesn’t bother me. And I know that many people enjoy Efren’s videos. It’s the QR stickers and graffiti that irk me! I very much appreciate your perspectiveI'll just say this...QR codes are here to stay; all types and for all reasons of use. When restaurants use them and when dining out el fresco I don't appreciate looking at the menu on my phone in the sun and I also need my reader glasses.
I personally don't fault Efren. 8x10" taxi and albergue services are certainly more of an eyesore, but we have no problem with those because they help us. Maybe they should use QR stickers instead; much less messy and graffiti looking...I wish him well.
As for burning his clothing on his first Camino, it was a pair of underpants. He was ignorant, so I give him the benefit of the doubt, but I am a fan.
Btw, it doesn't cost anything to look at his website, just like it doesn't cost us anything on Ivar's, unless we chose to donate. Youtubers hope to make a living from it and I don't mind.

Agree totally Laurie but his fans probably don't care, they are so enthusiastic about his vlogs etc.I think this is just as bad as the people who scrawl their names on the mojones or otherwise deface the camino. I look upon this not with disdain, as Efren has provided me with many hours of enjoyment as he walks many different Caminos, rather, one small sticker, which has a limited life on a sign, which already is providing specific information to los mochileros, but can provide help to many as they go on their way.I think this is just as bad as the people who scrawl their names on the mojones or otherwise deface the camino. I wish him well too. I don't understand the negativity. I don't plan to use his services because I plan to walk under my own steam but I don't feel the same sense of exasperation about him as others. What he does in his spare time has zero impact on my life. There are many people, even on this forum, who make money from the Camino, whether it's providing guided tours, or monetising their youtube channel or blog, selling their books (fiction and non fiction) - I wish them well too! Efren funds his trips through many means, as would anyone who pursues their hobby or business, or livelihood.
I, for one, do not put him down for this.

You must not have completed your previous response as there is no record of you posting on this thread previously. (Moderators can see posting history, including deleted posts)Curious that my recent reply to this was deleted. I was an Efren fan early as I found his videos were informative. I commented on one of his posts when his efforts turned to be more commercial only to have his father threaten me online with physical harm. That’s where I drew the line.
I will PM you to keep details out of the public, but I did my homework to verify who it was. It was unnerving, to say the least. The post in reference was when Efren was exploring developing virtual reality "tours" of various Camino routes, and my comment was that this may take away from the "original feeling" one has when they walk the Camino in person. I didn;t think the comment was offensive but a provocation of how some efforts can be helpful and others perhaps not.You must not have completed your previous response as there is no record of you posting on this thread previously. If it truly was his father who threatened you that's shocking. A while ago an imposter joined the forum using Efrén's name. I was able to contact the real Efrén and he told me that he has never been a member of this forum, so be wary of imposters.Okay, that must be the case, thank you.
I could have sworn I saw Efren post a few years ago and reply to a few comments. I’m almost positive he’s been a member of the forum.I was able to contact the real Efrén and he told me that he has never been a member of this forum, so be wary of imposters.
I'm pretty sure it was the imposter you are recalling. I, too, had emailed the "real" Efren after several bizarre posts came through, and he said he has never been a member of this forum.Edit* welp it could have been the imposter? But it was well before he “biznified” himself.
He's an entrepreneur... He can only charge what people will pay... Do, or did, you work for as little money and as much philanthropy toward others your whole life? Hes got a family and pretyy significant costs... You think he's outrageous, check what it would cost to get a tour company to pgysically accompany you ...I've been a big fan of Efren's vlogs, especially his earlier walks. I thought it was awesome his fans would send in donations for him along the way so he could get an albergue or even a meal. He would give credit to those who donated along with a price breakdown of the daily cost. Also, the drone work is spectacular, those views, wow!
Unfortunately, as time went on my admiration for him dwindled. After realizing his fans are paying for his huge adventures, Mt Everest comes to mind, and his new equipment, too much to mention, and now he is charging an outrageous price to be a tour guide on the Frances. I did post a comment on his page that yes, his prices were extremally high for a Camino Frances pilgrimage. But as you can imagine, he already knows that. Now his Instagram shows posts from the May Camino he walked with the eagerly paying newbies, I believe five in total. Not a bad haul for a months walk. I'm hoping they realized along the way, they could have walked entirely independent and saved a whole lot of dough. What a shame or should I say sham.
Signed,
No longer a fan.
My comment on the QR code stickers along the way: Too much is too much. It's all an eye sore.
Yes, he is now, and his past career was as a professional videographer employed by others. He left it to start doing videos of his own trips and in the process fell in love with the Caminos like many of us on this forum have done. He's an entrepreneur...
He also provides much more than complainers are giving credit for. Gear reviews, and links to places to acquire that gear; GPS tracks with minute detail about where things like bars, fountains, shaded paths etc. are located. Footage from lesser walked paths (giving people a sense of whethere such paths might be possible for them… and maybe diverting some traffic from the CF).Yes, he is now, and his past career was as a professional videographer employed by others. This site also has ads, links for the purchasing of Camino-related items, and so, it is monetized as well. Of course you are right but that is totally irrelevant to the discussion. This site also has ads, links for the purchasing of Camino-related items, and so, it is monetized as well.

It’s just a sticker. It’ll fall off and disintegrate with the rain. Don’t worry yourselves about it. We are all people just doing what we can to live.I saw a tiny sticker with a QR code on a sign as I was leaving Oviedo. As I am curious person I had to scan it. It was a link to Efrén González's website.

Last I heard, he was taking a group of people "as a guide"(for a fee) on the camino.I think I remember that Efren burned his clothes at Finisterre and took some/a lot (?) of grief for it. If anyone has contact info for him, I would send him a respectful note about this latest caper.

Few people here are grumpy about the impact of Brierley on increasing demand; fewer still ever moan about what The Way has done…
Efrén is the grandson of a Galician… he more than many has some “claim” more on par with the locals who make a living and advertise with signs and stickers along the way. His drone footage is always away from other pilgrims unless they are actively engaged in the material (waving, singing…).
He has a family to feed, and does not want to shoot commercials in Miami anymore.
I have asked him a few times for practical advice about a trail, or about gear, and he is very generous With information.
Also… has anyone noticed that Ivar has a drone now?
…crickets…
I agree with this comment. Been watching Efren since 2017. He provides tons of valuable content, has worked hard to get where he is, and loves his job.
It also sort of blows my mind that a QR code gets people worked up. I saw plenty of QR codes for albergues, taxis, menus while on my last Camino. Guess what I did? I just kept walking, thinking about my next cafe con leche.
Isn't he someone that promotes the Camino de Santiago and many other routes? He gave up his previous job to dedicate himself to this as a way of making a living as well as helping provide information for other pilgrims and travellers who may be thinking of embarking on the route.I think this is just as bad as the people who scrawl their names on the mojones or otherwise deface the camino. Curmudgeons of the world... Unite!I reserve the right to get pissed off about anything I want. QR codes, large guided tours, even convertible pants. Sometimes it even gives me pleasure. So don't judge us judgers.

Bloody humans everywhere doing things differently than me! The cheek of it!Curmudgeons of the world... Unite!
Yes I’m surprised at the negativity directed at Efren He’s entertained many with his magnificent drone photography and happy personality. Give it a break please, time to shut it downI think the important words here are "tiny sticker" and "curious"....not offended or angry...just curious. Once that curiosity has been satisfied then the usual negativity aimed at one individual begins.
I doubt that I am alone in feeling there is a lot of double standards and unfairness on display on this thread.

Differing opinions about QR stickers aside, this post really made me laugh. I think it may be one of my favourites on the forum for some time, perhaps a close second behind this from a while ago.Bloody humans everywhere doing things differently than me! The cheek of it!

I think I recall who posted this the first time I saw it here. But I could be wrong so won’t attribute that to anyone in particular.
On a more serious note, for me this discussion has opened my mind to other perspectives. I think I will be able to walk by QR stickers with little or no visceral reaction in the future. Though I imagine graffiti will still irk me
I don't know if little QR code stickers really bother me. I guess it depends if they're defacing things in a way that could be seen as litter or graffiti. If you are operating a drone near me - I leave. You are interfering with my peaceful experience and the commercial aspect…don’t get me started.
