Do I really need a hat?

Mar
Great! Be aware, you might have to put a warning on the label, for those ordering by mail to consult with an expert before proceeding with the installation! Remember those who were ready to drink bleach during the pandemic!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I never wear hats and did not bring one for my Camino in late May and early June 2024. Fortunately several in my group brought numerous hats. I found the Sun to be very harsh and borrowed a baseball cap for most of the two weeks. I used polls the whole time as well. I think carrying an umbrella sounds burdensome. Several people loved their hat with flaps that covered their neck.

My husband refused to wear a hat. then he got some sort of cancer on the scalp because of the sun. now he has to wear a hat no matter what the weather. I do not know the gender of the o.p. If you have a good head of head of hair it will give you some protection but good to have hat for midday sun. Buen Camino.

Fail to prepare? reduce your risk by buying this book full of practical info.
2nd ed.

Hair does not guarantee(?) protection. My sister has thick hair - she refused to wear a hat and ended up with sun stroke, fever and vomiting during the night after our walk.

I used to wear the lightest baseball hat I could find. I also carried a UV umbrella but I usually only opened it during the midafternoon sun. I got "crispy" on top of my ears which required medical help. After walking the Camino Mozarabe from Almeria I finally got smart and bought a "Panama" straw hat and wore it on the Camino Mozarabe from Malaga the next year. By the time I got to Burgos on the Camino Frances last October it was pretty beat up and the brim would not stay down to protect my ears. I asked for a new Panama in a nice hat shop near the Burgos Cathedral but when the lady asked where I would wear it and I said on the Camino she REFUSED to sell me a straw Panama. She said I needed a wool hat (with brim). I insisted. She REFUSED. Besides tortilla espanol my new WOOL brim hat is my best purchase on the Caminos so far. Two days later Hurricane Kirk lashed us on the Camino but I was comfortable in my WOOL brim hat. Buen Camino
