Deba options if Albergue is full

I know this is a hard stage and I'm not a fast walker. If the Albergue is full what are my options? I will be there around May 4, 2024.

We stayed here along with a half dozen other pilgrims in March 2022 as staying in Deba was not an option.

The hostess was wonderful and we had a marvelous time. Note it is a bit out of town, so if you don't want to back track, just look it up on google maps or such and you can navigate there over very quiet country roads. We got this from @Dave spreadsheet which is a great resource if you are coming up dry in your guidebook, gronze, etc.

I made a reservation at Albergue Izarbide which is just under 5 km past Deba. They accept reservations.

I started that day at Getaria, so it was just over a 22 km day.

When I stayed there in July, they still had space around 4-5pm, so you will hopefully have plenty of time in early May!

One thing you can consider, if it's not already in your plans, is to stay in Getaria instead of Zarautz the night before. That puts you ahead of the bulk of the other walkers.

Did the same... Good option, take a good break in Deba. Izarbide uses WhatsApp for booking ahead.

The breakfast pack that they offered at Izarbide didn't look appealing to me, so I survived on a half a bag of potato chips until I reached Markina around noon. So, definitely a good idea to buy something in Deba before heading to Izarbide.

As we walked further west from mid May this year, there were fewer and fewer bars open for even coffee. Therefore always carried daily supply of fruit and snacks after being caught out with no sustenance available all day. Also note that 'bar open' does not necessarily mean kitchen open for food at night in smaller villages! Joining Camino Frances was absolute culture shock in regards to cafes every few kilometres let alone number of fellow peregrinos.

I stayed at Izarbide in late April 2016 and shared a nice communal dinner with the others staying there. If I recall, the two large dormitories separated the men from the women.

Yes, but it's not strictly segregated. The young woman I was walking with and I opted to sleep in the men's side because there were no bottom bunks left in the women's side, and there was at least one man who wanted to be near his wife on the women's side.

I really liked that they gave us bins for the things that we would need in the night and had lockers for our backpacks.

I just followed the rules we were given back in 2016 and so did everyone else. What's the point of even being told the dorms are segregated if there are exceptions allowed, although I suppose change over the years.
