Mme Jeannine Warcollier. the woman who in France was known as the Mother of the Camino died 16 April 2016.

Read more regarding this most extraordinary lady in today's Mundicamino and in la Croix.

All the multitudes of pilgrims who were graciously helped by Mme Jeannine in Saint Jean Pied de Port during more than 60 years will never forget her many kindnesses. ...May she rest in peace.

Oh, I am so very sorry and sad to read this news....Mme Jeannine was a beautiful soul...she will be sadly missed by many, many of the pilgrims who have had the pleasure of meeting and talking with her over the years....RIP Jeannine.

That certainly appears to be a photo of Mme Jeannine!
It is taken in the kitchen corner of the newly rennovated municipal albergue.

Kathar1na is correct.

Mme Jeanne Warcollier who recently died after a long career dedicated to Saint Jacques in Paris and in France is not the same woman who for so many years has been the hospitalera at the municipal albergue in Saint Jean Pied de Port. Known as
la maman des pèlerins it is Mme Jeanine Curutchet who has and continues to graciously greet and assist so many pilgrims as they pass through Saint Jean.

I sincerely regret my error of mistaken identities and hope that it has not caused anyone distress...Mea culpa.

So sad. I had heard about This camino angel and was looking forward to meeting her in a week when we start. What a great life she had!

I remember Mme Jeanine Curutchet, a genuine star of the Camino but do not trust in her weather forecasting skills.

September 2003

Me: "Pensez-vous qu'il va pleuvoir aujourd'hui?"

Madame (looking up a a darkly clouded sky) "Non, peut-être, un peu ce matin, puis vient le vent et poof!"

I took the Valcarlos route and couldn't have got any wetter if I'd walked through a swimming pool!
