Going to cycle the Camino Portuges, starting in Porto on Monday 7th September
Hello,

My friend and I are setting off from Porto next Monday, we are going to cycle from there to Santiago. Does anyone recommend a specific route? I have tried to find online routes and I am having difficulties. We thought about taking the route that people go on foot. Can bikes go along the coastal route?

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated,

Many thanks!

A LOT of the Litoral is along or alongside roads. Leaving Porto you will be on asphalt while the walkers will be on wooden boardwalks.

Luis Frexio's routes are pretty good - http://www.caminador.es/?page_id=117Buen - I only got lost a couple of times back in June!

There's a nice riverside path into Pontevedra you shouldn't miss out on.

Good luck, be good and don't run over any weary walkers!

We are doing the same ride next May through to Finisterre. Looks like Brierley's book for the walkers is a pretty good bet for us 'bikies' too. Will be interested in a blog if you are doing one. Buen Camino.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Going out of Porto along the coast the are very broad sections of sidewalk which are used by cyclists and skaters or people on roller blades. Along the boardwalks (Leixões and northwards) there may be sections which prohibit bike use, but I've looked at the info boards and don't recall seeing this. Of course, if you do use them, go slowly and greet people to warn them.

On the coastal route, from Porto to Vila Praia de Ancora there are no sections where you need to pick up your bike, although you'll likely have to push it along some bits.
On the central route there are one or two spots where you will need pick up the bike and also push it along steep and rocky ground.

If it was just a stroll along the beach it wouldn't be as fun or worthwhile...
