HI
I am planning to start the Camino de Santiago in 2 weeks time using my own bike. The problem I have is trying to find a bike box for the return journey home (for the trains and planes).
Does anybody have contact details please of a bike shop in Santiago where I may be able to oreder two carboard boxes

Kind Regards

Roy

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Hi Roy,

I have two suggestions. There may be more options, if so I hope people will post them here.

1) Tour'n'Ride is a company located in new town. 5 minute walk from old town. They rent out bikes to pilgrims, ship the bike to your starting point then the pilgrims bikes it back to Santiago. They probably have boxes to sell you, or can give you some info on where to get them. I have talked to one of the guys that work here and I know he speaks english quite well.

Calle General Pardiñas, nº15 Bajo 8 (Galerias Bankinter)
Santiago de Compostela

2) Mailboxes ETC.
As you may know, from Mailboxes ETC. you can mail anything home (with UPS). They have boxes in all shapes and forms. I know they ship bikes, so you can probably buy your box here. I have also talked to the owners here, good people.

These guys are also located 5-10 minutes from old town, in new town. Walk from old town towards the train station, "Santiago de Guayaquil" is one of the streets on your left.

I, too, am needing to box my bike in SdeC, for a return flight to Australia. I'm looking to cycle in finishing my Camino late Saturday 12th October and leave early Monday morning - so need somewhere that opens late Saturday afternoon or on Sunday. Ideally, I'm looking for a bicycle shop opening those extended hours that runs a bike boxing service.

Any suggestions?

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Ivar, I will try to email these 2 businesses to ask about bicycle boxing services Saturdays and Sundays, and place a post here if I hear a reply. Thank you.

you will probably find that the service you demand is not available between the time of your arrival and departure.

tour'n'ride closes Saturdays at 18.00 hrs, but at least they aren open for business on that day.

to be on the safe side, arrive Friday around mid-day.

Ideal pocket guides for during and after your Camino. Each weighs just 40g (1.4 oz).
Thank you, Ivar. I'll contact them and see what I can arrange.

Also, I got an error message bounce back from emailing the 2nd of your initial suggestions - Mail Boxes Etc. A Coruña - (mbe127@adabel.net).

I have taken my bike in a box to Europe for many long rides, maybe 6 times, including finishing in Barcelona some years ago, and alway found a bike shop at the destination that is willing to give their boxes (which all new bikes are delivered to bike shops in) free which otherwise are collected in the rubbish.

I have always packed my bike myself and checked it in at the airport as oversize luggage at no additional cost on regular economy tickets back to Australia.

I bit of a hassle of course and takes time, although I never travel on tight schedules, and organising transport to the airport.

In this case ringing ahead to a bike shop in Santiago to ensure they have a box of a suitable size when you arrive before they throw them out.

Just as an FYI, this thread was started 19 years ago (back in 2005) so the information in the first few post might be outdated.

Perfect memento/gift in a presentation box. Engraving available, 25 character max.
Thank you, Ivar.

Thank you.

Phoenix you're pushing Spanish business hours beyond their limits. You will have to call bike shops and negotiate I reckon. Try Bicicleta Olviera, they do bike packing but outside business hours they will probably charge you a premium, good luck.

Ivar, Sirage and Richard, you've been very helpful: I've decided to cut out the Burgos to Leon/Astorga meseta section (I've committed to starting in St-Jean-Pied-de-Port St 5th Oct, since I missed this in my 2006 cycle Camino, but have done the meseta sections before) to get to SdeC by Fri 11th, so Bicicleta Oliviera can box my bike in Spanish business hours(!).

So, does anyone have any advice on getting a lift/shuttle bus for my bike and myself from Burgos to Leon/Astorga? Are there services I can book for this?

Sorry for all the questions!

You will have no problem with this except for the fact that the bike will need to be in a bag of some sort, and this can be a hassle. When I found myself unexpectedly needing to bus from Logroño to Burgos in 2023 I bought a cheap blue tarp and some tape at a bazaar shop and made a simple sack for my disassembled bike - obviously a time-consuming solution. I packed and unpacked at the respective bus stations.

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Ivar, just checked Rome2Rio and there are trains that I can take between these cities. They're not fast trains, I don't think, so my guide book says they should accept my bike unboxed.

Indeed, train is the simplest solution, provided that it is not Alvia or AVE.
