Coming Back from Fractured Ankle Shoe Thoughts..Hokas to ?

Hi. I recently fractured my ankle coming down the hill just out of Tomar on CP. In recovery and rehab stage now. I love my hoka speed goat 4s. They served me so well on my entire Camino Frances in Sept (800k) but concerned that the high stack height contributed to my turning my ankle on this Camino Portuguese. So I'm thinking about going to a new shoe when I return to the Camino. Would love people's thoughts on finding a shoe that will provide cushion yet stability for my ankle. Part of me wants to stay with my Hokas..... At the end of long hikes, my legs were never that tired with my hoka speed goats. But this is the first time I have turned my ankle 45 years And just think changing shoes maybe in the cards. But I'd love everyone's thoughts.

I'm wondering if you had speedgoat low or mid cut? If low I suggest considering the mids. I too love the energy and cushion that hooks give my feet and legs... But my weak ankles require mids for support. My other going to boot that over walked too Camino's in are Keens targhee II (mids)

I had the lows, so thank you for your ideas.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
A few of the ‘trail runner’ companies are making mid versions of their shoes which may give you more security. Altras are doing their Olympus this year for example. Altra already does one for the Lone Peak but that’s a lot less cushion. The speedgoats might be better since you’re already familiar.

Once you’re healed up I would suggest some training on uneven surfaces if you weren’t doing that already. A lot of my training previously would be on essentially flat, even, paths and when I got on trail I would roll my ankle just a bit which I never did before. I started finding things to walk over/on that would challenge me to train the smaller control and support muscles as well as improve my balance. As most of us don’t walk on anything more challenging than a wet sidewalk I think we don’t work those mechanisms enough.

Good luck!

Thank you so much I really appreciate you taking the time to give me some advice. Buen Camino

I did CP in 2019 with Hoka Bondi's. Didn't have any foot issues, though I was focused on where I was stepping since incurring a broken bone in foot plus severe ankle sprain in 2017 (not walking related).

I also use Hokas as I find the cushioning helps with a touch of arthritis in one foot.
Hiking poles can help take some of the load and I use them on the up and down slopes for stability as well.
I've looked at Hoka hiking boots which might combine the cushioning with the support you're after.

So very sorry to hear of your aborted Camino. I too, love Hoka's...like "walking on marshmallows"!
I just looked and see they now make a version with ankle support, starting at a Men's size 7. Take a look online as they could possibly be a good option.
