The Class of .. threads were started back in when 2007 Arn had the bright idea of creating a topic for all those planning to go in 2008. His post:

It appears from the current number of folks at this thread, that there is a significant number of fellow pilgrims in the mid-to-final stages of the planning for their Camino. I have also noticed a decidedly large number of folks observing from the fringes.

It's been my observation, that most folks don't "accidentally" come across a site such as this. They have a purpose and, if that purpose is to seek out information, therefore why not declare yourself by joining the site along with we peregrinos...past, present and soon to be. Start your Camino from right there in the comfort of your own home, but start it with the knowledge that there are folks that you want to meet and will want to meet you in return.

The number of folks making their Camino each year is in the thousands, surely there are more of you out there.

April 2018 if everything turns out fine. It's still an idea, but I'd love to start from Lourdes to the Aragonés from Oloron. Then going north to Loyola (my patron saint) from Puente la Reina or Logroño by the Ignaciano to finaly join the North way in Deva or Zumaya. Arriving to Santiago from the Primitivo. All that as a honeymoon. Sounds kinda crazy. But we think it's a good way to start a new life together if the camino is a deep life changing experience.

I had hoped to go on the Camino Norte in 2016 but circumstances would not allow it. So my plan is for a fall of 2018 Camino. I find myself thinking of the Camino quite often and despite all the struggles and so forth from the first experience I still really want to go. In fact if I could I would go every year - I just think it's fun and it's good for me. I don't feel liked it changed my life but rather feel like it's something that should be part of my life - if that makes any sense. yesterday I mapped the days and flights ............ now I need to save my vacation (and money) to make it happen! In the US the best stores for gear would be Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop. Beyond this, there are companies like North Face that also offer hiking gear.

I'm planning to walk the Camino Frances from St Jean to Santiago next year, beginning on 30th April 2018. I'll be walking with my husband, 13 yr old son, 21 yr old daughter and possibly 24 yr old stepdaughter too.

We're starting on 30th April because it's my daughter's 21st birthday. She had her first birthday on the camino, in Burgos, when her father and I walked from Roncesvalles to Santiago. We carried her on our backs, from April to June 1998, and had a mainly wonderful experience that became even more important than we realised at the time. Her father suddenly died of a brain haemorrhage in November 1998. We rebuilt our lives over the years, and eventually made a new family. We've always planned to walk the camino again, my daughter and I, and so next year, we will do it together and welcome her to adulthood. I'm looking forward to carrying substantially less than last time.

I am slightly anxious about how much the camino will have changed in those 20 years, and about the fact that we are setting off at a busy time. But, having read many posts here, the spirit of trust and kindness seems to still remain; we will accept and walk with whatever arises.

I will look forward to meeting you on the road next year.

I've spent most of this weekend dreaming of planning to walk the Camino Frances. I rejoined the forum after months of sitting on the sidelines and am ready to embark on the overwhelming, yet exciting process of planning my first Camino for July 2018. While contributing to the forum feels official, I know it won't feel real until I purchase my airline tickets. This may be my biggest hurdle. I'd like to fly out of San Diego or Los Angeles and would like some suggestions on where to fly to? Should I purchase roundtrip or fly out of Santiago when I'm done? I hope to take 4-5 weeks off for it. I suppose I'll figure these things out as I dive deeper into planning. I've saved the Getting Started document. I would also love to hear or be referred to first timer stories/experiences. Thank you!!

As always happens in life my plans for a march leaving date to do either the VDLP or the CF have come to a grinding halt, other important things have got in the way therefore I will have to delay my start date. I am now leaving for the VDLP in Sept/Oct 2018, this I hope is cast in stone, not sure of exact dates because I'm unsure of the temperatures at that time.
One way or another we will get there.

After walking my first short Camino last October from Sarria, I am now obsessed with planning my next one, hoping to walk the CF from SJPDP in oct 2018. Even though I only walked a short slice, i can't get it out of my mind and most importantly my heart . It was the best 9 days of my life (yes I chose to do it slow and squeeze every last drop out by not walking too fast!) and I honestly can't remember feeling so happy.
I have been lurking in this forum since sept last year and it has been so helpful and insightful. I felt it was about time to introduce myself and confess my obsession with planning for the next one. I don't usually plan things that far in advance but I feel like if I didn't have the outlet of this forum, I would be boring the life force out of all of my loved ones!
So it's a big hi from me and a big thank you to the wonderful community out there for all the support, discussion and advice

Hi Everyone! My daughter and I are planning our 1st mother/daughter trip to do our 1st Camino (Frances) in April 2018. We are both full of many emotions as we lock in our flights (anxiety, excitement, fear, etc). Like others have said here before me, Ive been following your forums and doing a lot of sitting on the sidelines, just reading all the threads, watching replies to peoples questions that were similar to mine, etc. Trying to educate myself as much as possible so I don't jump on here asking the same questions that have already been asked 1000 times. Although I still feel like I have a lot of questions, they seem to be narrowing down to the specifics/logistics and not just the broad type questions lol. So tonight I decided it was time to jump in, introduce myself and say HI to all the VERY helpful veterans for all their advice, suggestions, patience with us noobies planning our 1st Caminos. And of course a big HI too all our fellow classmates of 2018 (woot woot!). We are flying East Coast USA into CDG and hope to begin our walk SJdP 1st week of April. Is anyone else looking at the same time frame? We wanted to go early enough in spring to avoid the major congestion and heat of summer months, but don't want to be all alone/isolated while walking either.

Hi Ana, I live in the US and would suggest you check out an REI while your here, and they have locations on east and west coast, but not so much in the middle of the country. Their a HUGE backpacking/hiking/camping outfitter where most people who do long distance hikes 2,000 miles and above (Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail) go to get a lot of their hiking gear due to expertise, selections, and their return policy. They have an awesome return policy that just can't be beat (1yr any reason) as well as huge selection of packs (hundreds upon hundreds). They also have trained pack specialists that will "fit" you for your pack to make sure you are getting the correct torso size for you which is so important. Nothing worse then a cheap pack with no support that doesn't fit your torso correctly. Super Friendly staff that will spend hours with you if needed going over any and all questions you have. Employees are all hiking/camping enthusiasts and love what they do and helping people find their new gear. They really can't be beat when it comes to hiking/backpacking/camping. You can also visit them online www.REI.com to see all their stuff online. They carry pretty much every brand of gear you can possibly think of and will not steer you wrong or try to talk you into the highest price gear if its not best for your needs.
Another awesome store for hiking/camping/backpacking is LLBean if your going to be in the upper NorthEast area of US (NewEngland) they are located in Freeport Maine. Huge doesn't begin to describe this outfitter. I think their store takes up 4-5 city blocks in all 4 (N-S-E-W) directions. Seriously like 1/4 of this town is LLBean lol. If you can't find it at LLBean it doesn't exist. You could spend 3 days in this outfitter wandering around and never see everything they have. They also have an awesome return policy and if its "LLBean brand" its lifetime guarantee returns. Example you buy a LLBean sleeping bag, 5 yrs later its shot the down is coming out everywhere, send it back and they'll replace it free Super friendly staff, phenomenal selection of everything you could imagine in an outdoor outfitter and its in quite possibly the cutest little nostalgic ocean front fresh lobster and seafood New England town you'll ever lay eyes on. So you get the vacation experience just being in the town, and the shopping experience of LLBean lol.
I could give you more suggestions if you need them, but depending on where your going to be in the US (its a really large country) I would try to find an REI (east/west coasts), or if your gonna be in NewEngland area (Maine) LLBean is an absolute must

Woefully overwhelmed with all the information out there, but I still have time to prepare so I'm not letting it get to me. Just taking it all in right now, one step at a time. Started the physical aspect of preparation by walking 5km every night, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

The best option is REI. They specialize in hiking gear and have a large selection of boots and hiking shoes. Cabela's and Bass Pro Shop have a very small selection for hiking gear and it's not really the best first option. Try to get to an REI store even if that means driving 30 minutes. Stay away from Walmart! LOL.

If your travels take you out West, Sierra Trading Post has a good selection of hiking gear. They have a store in CT and another in Vt, also but the majority are west of the Mississippi. As mentioned above by Alaska, REI is also a great resource.

Some people can be lonely in the middle of a crowd. But if you are at all sociable there is little chance of that on the CF There is also very little chance of getting lost. Lots of yellow arrows along the way. And if by chance you cannot see one just wait a minute or two and follow the next pilgrim to pass by. People who stray off track tend to be intercepted by friendly locals anyway and pointed in the right direction

Hello, I am Nikos from Rhodes Island-Greece and we are planning with my wife and daughter to do the Camino next summer (mid. July '18)
from the Ponferrada to Santiago. I am very excited and started the training preparation by walking at hills, forests and unlevel ground.
We are in good good physic situation and decided to do a 10 days walking trip but still not sure about the starting point. We decided to walk 25 km in average daily, so walking the Camino from Ponferrada will probably making our walking route shorter. I will be nice if someone can suggest me a different starting point .

This is my first post after joining the forum exactly a year ago. A big thank you to all as I have learnt a lot from this forum and am sure will benefit more from all the tips and advice provided. Praying that I will be able to take extended work leave next year as I am planning to walk for the first time, the Camino Frances starting mid-September 2018.

I hope to do this walk at my own pace - to enjoy the walk rather compelling myself to complete the walk in a limited time. Will be walking alone and perhaps make some friends along the way.

Thank you once again for all forum contributors - many fears that I had initially were allayed. Biggest fear I supposed would be the language barrier. I better start learning a couple of Spanish phrases to get by.

I wouldn't worry to much about language problems, especially not on the Camino Francés! The people there are used since a really long time to the basic needs of pilgrims (drink, food, bed). But a few phrases in Spanish are always appreciated, have a look at duolingo.com (free and fun). Otherwise English tends to be anyway the lingua franca among pilgrims. Buen Camino, SY

Class of 2018: my wife and I are in the planning stages. We live in Melbourne (Australia), and my wife has family in Switzerland. We start on 10 June from the other side of Lake Geneva (a place called Les Evouettes), walk to Geneva, join the Via Gebennensis to Le Puy-en-Velay, where we will celebrate my wife's 60th birthday! We then follow the Via Podiensis to Arthez-de-Béarn, and leave the GR65 to walk to Bayonne and then down to Hendaye, where we should arrive by 1 September. We then follow the Camino del Norte (with a side track to Oviedo) and hopefully we will finish our Camino in Santiago on 30 October.
We're aiming for an average of 15km a day.
We're very grateful to all the contributors to this forum for the wealth of information provided.

I will be leaving SJPdP April 9th 2018.
Based on posts I have been readings (yes I have been "lurking" since Aug of this year) I guess weather will determine which path I take, Napoleon or Valcarlos. I was nervous about my physical abilities (or should I say lack there of) but having read so many posts, I know as long as I go at my own pace I should be able to do it.
I am trying to go with the "wing-it" crowd and plan as loose as my, anal retentive planning personality, will let me. I have no plan past, I will start walking April 9th and my return flight is June 18th. I hope to make it to Finisterre, but, as it has been since I knew I must walk the Camino, I trust all things will fall into place exactly as they are supposed to.

But first, in october this year, we're going on a vacation to the US for pleasure and to find good gear for the Camino. So let's see how that goes first!

BTW, if you have any suggestions on stores we could find good backpacks and sleeping bags, we would love to hear!

Not sure where in the US you are going but I would highly recommend REI.

Hello, have wanted to join the Camino since I was a freshman in college and took Medieval Art History with a professor passionate about pilgrimage routes. I'm from Ohio USA and just may have done it at 22 but my parents were terrified of me traveling alone. Cell phone coverage and internet was rougher and I felt like I would seriously be worrying them. And since then, it's been the usual jobs, marriage, etc things that keep one from this. I've recently decided to close my business that I started and, in May, will have a weird open inbetween period from that business to new opportunities.

I'm now 31 and in rather bad shape (aka owning your own business before 30) but this dream has always been in the back of my mind. My husband is a teacher so doesn't work during the summer and can take care of any extra things. And I think, perhaps, now is my time to just do it!

10 years ago, I was undiagnosed but had severe anxiety. I am now diagnosed. And while I love travel and love being "free," it's a struggle when I'm not 100% sure I have a bed for the night. That is my #1 fear with albergues on the camino. So I hope to plan a bit but not too much.

Hi Everyone! My daughter and I are planning our 1st mother/daughter trip to do our 1st Camino (Frances) in April 2018. We are both full of many emotions as we lock in our flights (anxiety, excitement, fear, etc). Like others have said here before me, Ive been following your forums and doing a lot of sitting on the sidelines, just reading all the threads, watching replies to peoples questions that were similar to mine, etc. Trying to educate myself as much as possible so I don't jump on here asking the same questions that have already been asked 1000 times. Although I still feel like I have a lot of questions, they seem to be narrowing down to the specifics/logistics and not just the broad type questions lol. So tonight I decided it was time to jump in, introduce myself and say HI to all the VERY helpful veterans for all their advice, suggestions, patience with us noobies planning our 1st Caminos. And of course a big HI too all our fellow classmates of 2018 (woot woot!). We are flying East Coast USA into CDG and hope to begin our walk SJdP 1st week of April. Is anyone else looking at the same time frame? We wanted to go early enough in spring to avoid the major congestion and heat of summer months, but don't want to be all alone/isolated while walking either.

In the US the best stores for gear would be Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop. Beyond this, there are companies like North Face that also offer hiking gear.

Start your Camino from right there in the comfort of your own home, but start it with the knowledge that there are folks that you want to meet and will want to meet you in return.

The number of folks making their Camino each year is in the thousands, surely there are more of you out there.

I fly to Malaga on May 11, 2018 to study Spanish for a week. Then I will head north and walk either the CF from Leon or head farther north to Oviedo and walk the Primitivo. I may wait until May to make the decision. It will depend on the weather and how well I do at Spanish. I will have 3 weeks to travel to the camino, walk and then get to Porto for my flight home. I'm very excited and having fun looking at the different routes! This forum has such great information.

I have anxiety too (it got really bad a couple years ago) but when it comes to the Camino, it's the thrilling kind. You will always find a bed and there will be lots of us lost and free together.

Thank you Heather for your words. Yes it has been a very traumatic time. I think we walk the Camino when we are called to it. Planning for Camino brings focus and a dream closer for me.

Hi, i'm hoping to cycle the Camino in 2018, time constraints mean that i'll probably ride from Leon to Santiago, i'll have 9 days maximum to do it. Glad I found this forum as i have loads of questions to ask.

Flights booked to leave good old Aussie 14th May ..to Paris, then SJPdP, and then, as some wise person posted, IF I don’t become ill or get injured, I want to walk the whole way.
Not even sure how the idea came to me, but since it did, I must admit I’ve been a bit obsessed, and despite offers of company from friends, I feel it’s something I need to do by myself, partly because I want to walk at my own pace, meet and chat with new people, and partly because I’ve always thought of myself as a reasonably strong independent person ( so let’s see if there’s any truth to that) . I haven’t travelled by myself before, sooo now I need to see if I I fall apart day 1! But I will have the voice of my partner, who died in an accident 3 years ago, in my head, saying “ come on girl, get moving, you can do it!”
I love reading this forum. Trouble is, I spend too much time reading about it when I should be training.

Hi Karen I have to agree with you on the forum addiction. It's a magical- learning-time -well-spent -Odyssey before the real thing. I too am hooked. I believe the value of the forum beats time on the road. That awaits us in Spain. All strength to you and so sorry about the loss of your partner. My first Camino too. I start 20th Apr from SJDP ex Cape Town in sunny South Africa.

Planning late April 2018. Le Puy to Conque (or maybe as far as Moissac, on verra) which will be my first Camino and I am doing it solo. I've not been on the forum long but already find it an immense resource in all regards (spiritually, advice, everything!). I have a big birthday coming up the 4th of May and will finish the Camino and then celebrate in Paris seule. Never felt like so much like something was meant to be and I expect it to change my life in some ways.

In March 2018 I am planning to walk the Kumano Kodo in Japan, thus gaining my Dual Pilgrim award. The Kumano Kodo is a sister pilgrimage trail to the Way of St James in Spain, and these are the only two Unesco World Heritage trails in the world. (I say planning - my flights are booked, I've made my reservation requests for minshukus and ryokans along the path, and paid for them! I just hope I will be fit enough and able to complete the walk)


At the end of April I hope to walk the last 100km or so of the Portuguese Camino, once again celebrating my birthday whilst on the Camino, most likely in Pontevedra.

There is the possibility of my also walking the Ingles at some point in 2018.

Last week in April and all of May on the CF. I am hoping to start in Roncesvalles as I know that with my age and physical infirmities the Pyrenees will be beyond my abilities. A year in the Nam as a Marine and a career in big city law enforcement took its toll. (Kids don't try this at home).

So if you are traveling them and see a really tall geezer gimping along, it will probably be the old Lurch. Nickname due to the old Addams family TV show of the 60s! Should probably change my logon name as I think about it.

So Buen camino to those of us working up to next year.
