Checked baggage

Time of past OR future Camino
2016
I rarely check baggage so I need a little help. I am flying USA to Porto via Madrid. I am walking the Camino Portugués before heading to a Galician pueblo where I will teach English for a year. I obviously do not want to lug my big duffel bag with me on the Camino. When I check my baggage in Omaha, would it be possible to tell the airline to have it taken off the plane and sent to baggage claim at Madrid so I can ship it to Santiago with Ivar's storage service? Or, would it just be safer to have it go to Porto with me and just ship it from Porto to Santiago?

I have never had luggage issues while traveling and I want it to stay that way. Having it go with me to Porto would be the safest bet. However, it would be easier (I'm fluent in Spanish, not at all in Portuguese) and I assume cheaper to ship it from the airport post office in Madrid during my layover. ¡Gracias!

I think this is a question for the airline.

You might need to consider sending your bag as unaccompanied baggage if you want it to take a different (albeit shorter) route than you, which would be an extra cost. But you will be facing the shipping costs of moving the bag anyhow, so its more about the relative costs of moving from Madrid or Porto.

Have you considered sending the bag to your final destination in Galicia rather than to Santiago? That might save on storage costs, unless you feel you need access to the bag once you have finished in Santiago.
