Seems like steam is gathering for the León part of Castilla y León to split away from Castilla, and become its own autonomous region within Spain.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
The problem is Vallodolid gets all the money, while León, the historic capital of Spain gets the left overs
I know next to nothing about their situation so thank you for this background information as the Telegraph article doesn't mention it. This reason wouldn't surprise me in the least. These issues or movements, all over Europe, are never, or not primarily, about undoing or renewing historical ties, or about religion, or language use, or cultural identity but about the distribution of taxpayers money by the centralised superior entity - the usual argument is either that ”we the poor region don’t receive“ enough money out of the central pot“ or that ”we the rich region have to pay too much money into the central pot as support for other regions“ ...

This has been going on for a while and if I am correct the kingdoms were united after the Napoleonic wars, to the general disgruntlement of the Leonese. On my first Camino in 2002, I was walking with two determined retired women from Guelph, Ontario, and every time we would see the painted signs saying "Leon Solo," they would respond with "Castile con Leche," to the confusion and amusement of Spanish pilgrims.

Followers of language issues might be interested that Leonese now has some official status in the province, and devout followers of language issues can attend mass in Leonese in (IIRC) three churches of the diocese.

“ León has nothing to do with Castile,” said the Leonese mayor, José Antonio Díez.”

I’m pretty sure Alfonso VI would take issue with that statement, but history is a living thing and constantly birthing new chapters.

We noticed several times on the Francès in 2015 when walking through Leon, graffiti saying Castilla Y Leon with the Y underlined.

Leon was the historic capital of the Kingdom of Leon (Leon, Galicia and Asturias). But never was capital of Spain.
Until Philip II put definetely the capital of Spain in Madrid in 1561, it was changing, Segovia, Valladolid and Toledo, but never León.
