Hi, garamara,

I walked from Lisbon in 2009, and didn't meet one other peregrino till I got to Porto. I have compiled an on-line guide on the Lisbon to Porto stage, and Johnnie Walker of this forum has written the Porto-Santiago guide. You can find them both here: http://www.csj.org.uk/guides-online.htm (The Confraternity of St. James requests a donation in exchange for the free guides).

I am in the process of updating the guide, but it probably won't be up on the website before you leave. I can mail you the main updates, if you send me a PM. The big news is that there are now three pilgrim accommodations south of Porto: a private albergue near Quinta da Cardiga; a private albergue in Sernadelo; and the Jesuits take in pilgrims in Cernache. In 2009 there were none, so things are starting to move on this segment of the Caminho.

I think you'll enjoy starting from Lisbon. The Caminho goes through some very nice Portuguese towns and villages along the way, with churches, roman ruins, and monasteries. It is mostly asphalt road walking, but not on major thoroughfares.

Bom caminho to you, Laurie

Hi Garamara and Mike,
a Canadian friend and I walked from Lisbon in September 2010.
40 degs on the 1st Sept, the day we arrived and continued extremely hot until we reached Porto but we were told this heat was exceptional. We followed Laurie,s superb guide and John Brierleys for after Porto.only had a bit of confusion at the first forest but I wasn't paying enough attention.
It was a beautiful walk with long days but lots to see and great food. 5 french Canadian pilgrims were walking at the same time and we met them at the various residencials we stayed in. We heard of others who were a day or so ahead and we bumped into two German guys a few times. After Porto I was happy to meet many pilgrims and all the Albergues were full ,that was a Holy year of course.
Everyone very friendly although at first not many Portuguese were aware of the Camino.
I did put a few posts on and photos that you may want to look back at.
Bom caminho
Heather

Thanks Heather and Laurie,

Both your advice here and on other posts has been invaluable. I am in countdown mode now, a couple of last walks next week, and maybe pack my bag then as well.

Mike
