hi Sil,
Thank you for the website which gave more details of the New Anglican Bishop of Christchurch. We live in Christchurch New Zealand and to know she did the 800 km pilgrimage of the St James Walk is heartening. Wish there was more tolerance and attempts to lead a more harmonious life, she has set an example and although not an Anglican will stop to give her our greetings.

Bishop Matthews has actually made the journey to Santiago seven times. At one point, she had considered dragging her ordinands of the year along as a form of perambulating pre-ordination retreat but found little enthusiasm among them for the notion, possibly having studied so hard at their Greek that they were unprepared for the walk (cough cough).

I heard her speak eloquently at evensong at the opening of an exhibition of art of the Camino at Saint James' Cathedral in Toronto-- those among the congregation not inclined to pay attention to her discussion of the pilgrimage as an image of our own life journeys will perhaps have been amused by her account of how her canons presented her with several sets of purple polka-dot boxers so that their bishop could retain episcopal dignity in the close quarters of pilgrims' albergues.

She has a reputation as being tough, kind and spiritual, and we're sorry to lose her, but hope that all goes well for her in New Zealand.
