Camino patch

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
I start my first Camino from SJDP on April 21st. I have a Camino patch for my backpack. Normally I add patches to my pack after I do something, but am thinking of adding this one before the journey. Think this would be premature or disrespectful?
Not at all. Lots of people like to have a Camino patch on their backpack while they are walking the Camino.

We carry a scallop shell when, historically speaking, that wasn't picked up until the end of the journey in Finisterre.
A patch is the same thing in my view.
Do as you wish...there are no hard & fast 'rules'. 🤗

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).

Not at all, think of it as a destination label - if you get lost then people will know where to send you ;)

Buen Camino!

Last couple of centuries pilgrims have been walking with shells from their starting destination.

But true, coming back with a shell as a proof of having made the camino and no longer being lawless was reality in the medieval ages.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

Yes...therefore a relatively 'new' practice in the context of the age (as in years) of the Camino as a pilgrimage! 😄

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
First and foremost, I don't think anyone will be offended.
Second, as has already been pointed out, the shift you are describing with the patch (from evidence of pilgrimage completion to evidence of pilgrim status) has already occurred with the shell. You're just moving it to a different format.
Third and final, if you are concerned about misleading folk, you can consider the type of patch and placement. A patch that says "Santiago de Compostela", placed amid a number of other desitnation patches for places you have been communicates a different message from a Camino Forum patch, or a pilgrim organization patch (like the Canadian Company of Pilgrims patch on my backpack), or a shell patch, not so located.
