I just arrived in Bilbao after 41 days from Le Puy and went to the Cathedral de Santiago. I start the Olvidado 25 Sept. The caminoolvidado.com app and the GPS tracking function seem to indicate the precise starting point is just in front of the Cathedral, assumedly at the fountain. Is that correct? I don’t see a sign or arrow or scallop shell anywhere.

Yes, that is correct. You will need to walk away from the old town towards the Intermodal bus terminal and follow the yellow arrows. The first hiking to Guenes is mainly road with about 2 kms that are dangerous..stay on the side of the road facing the traffic. Beautiful view when you are up on the hill overlooking Bilbao.

You follow the signage for the Norte until a roundabout with a sign to the left for Balmaseda. Follow (no signage here) till you come to a bridge where the very clear split off between the Olvidado and the Norte is indicated.

I used Wikiloc tracks from Cuñarro (alias Ender or Enderjace on Wikilocs) for the entire Olvidado.
