A call to everyone familiar with the Camino de Santiago! My name is Hannah Dear, and I am a student at the University of Mississippi. I am writing my thesis on the impact of secularization in Spain on the religious identity of the Camino de Santiago, and I have prepared a survey, which I’ve attached below. If you could participate, I would be very grateful! Your perspective would be extremely helpful for my research.
The survey takes 2 minutes and is anonymous. It is not necessary to have walked the Camino de Santiago or to be an expert on the subject to participate.

My experience with the Camino: I spent last semester studying abroad in Bilbao, Spain. As a devout Catholic and an avid hiker, I was already interested in the Camino. When I arrived in Spain, I began doing research and hiking parts of the routes. It just became more and more fascinating and spiritually enriching! Not to mention the friends I made on the Camino are some of the best people I know. I'm very grateful for the experience and hoping to continually return!

Indeed, random input from people who have never walked a Camino let alone actually undertaken a Pilgrimage to the shrine of Santiago is just what this sort of survey needs

Just did the survey and only had one problem, the question on religiosity was too restricted (so chose closest answer).
Agree with TincaTinker that to ask those who have never been is a fail. What is point? Would/could only be assumptions.

I am assuming this survey will not be the only source of information for your thesis. I can very clearly see why it would not be necessary for someone to have walked the camino to respond to your survey as you are interested in the identity of the Camino, not the experience or perception of people who have walked it. However, it´s a huge and mind-bogglingly complex subject. Firstly, how does one assess the level of secularization in Spain? The implication is that Spain has become or is becoming secularized so you would need to establish how secular Spain is now compared to say, 1936, 1975, 2000, or 1830. The religious identity of the camino might be easier to describe, but identity when? Even in medieval times there was controversy and discussion about the purpose and value of pilgrimage and in order to measure the impact (or change) you would need to make a comparison between now and a time in the past. You will also need to demonstrate that if the religious identity of the camino has changed, was this as a result of secularization? Good luck. Please send us a link when your thesis is published

Because of the notation "Forks" as an answer to multiple questions I did not complete the survey. I think I know what was intended but on research-based material this is really not acceptable.

On four or five questions, I think the number one is replaced by "Forks". So, instead of saying One, Two, it says, Forks, Two. It could be on the Yes, No answers (Forks, No), I can't remember and when I try to start the survey again, I jump to where I stopped the last time. Sometimes in surveys like this a flawed question is added to see if the people completing a survey are actually paying attention. It speaks to reliability or trustworthiness of a respondent's replies. In this case, I think it is some other issue but I can't tell. I have done research like this and am always willing to help others but if they don't take the time to ensure that their survey does not have simple flaws, it becomes a waste of time.

I assume it is a translation issue of some sort.

Two remarks :
1. A " full " Camino? There is no such thing as a full Camino. You start somewhere and you hopefully end in Santiago.
2. I liked the fact we could choose " agnostic " in religion.

That's interesting. I wondered if it could just be the way that it translated on my computer. Unfortunately I can't bring it up from the start anymore.

interesting. I completed the questionnaire with pleasure.

I must say that I found it sometimes difficult to answer because the meaning of the questions is related to one's culture and can be unclear. For example, the term “spiritual” can have different meanings for different people. Also, in my very humble opinion there is a vague sense of a certain negative initial opinion towards the secularization of society and the camino. For example, not everyone who is secular adheres to the idea that it is “tourism.”

But, again, I am fully aware that any kind of questionnaire obviously can suffer from some cognitive bias that the author introduced without even realizing it.

To the "forks" point -- I don't know why that is! The survey is forkless on my end. I went back in editing mode to find it and didn't see any forks anywhere.

To the question about allowing non-pilgrims to take the survey -- I am most interested in pilgrim responses, but my interest extends to the global perception of the Camino. So people who have seen movies about it, people with interest in the Camino who have never done it, things like that.

That is unfair -- pilgrimage in Spain and religiosity in Spain is not strictly limited to the walking of a Camino.

FWIW, I do wish to commend the author of the survey concerning the rather good Spanish versus English, it's unusually elegant translation-wise.

Well it is a complex topic interweaving multiple aspects.

And frankly VERY many in Spain and elsewhere have their opinions on both the pilgrimage to Santiago and the Camino. The two are both identical and separate, and questions relative to the pilgrimage and the Camino relative to both religiosity and secularisation in Spain among Spaniards as much as foreigners are not limited in perspective to the views and experiences of Camino foot pilgrims only and exclusively.
