Hello All,

Any advice you can give is sincerely appreciated.

Started planning a Camino from Porto to Santiago in the spring of 2013. We will be brinning wounded warrior vets with us. Some will be on prosthetics and possibly one in a wheel chair. How difficult will it be for us to push a wheel chair along the route.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Train for your next Camino on California's Santa Catalina Island March 16-19
I walked that route in 2011. It was quiet, wild and beautiful. I will never forget it. One or two stages might be difficult - or impossible - with a wheel-chair.
Check out: http://www.calig.co.uk/camino_de_santiago.htm - my web site: at the bottom of the page are links to photo's of the Porto to Santiago route, as well as my diary. Some are difficult - cobbled - and the part going over the mountain is quite steep. I hope this helps you.
Good luck with all your planning, and - buen camino!

Stephen.

The camino Portugues has some beautiful bits. Generally speaking it is probably not too hard. I reckon war vets have a degree of will and stamina that will manage most of the route. I have my doubts about the steep incline after Ponte de Lima, this is not only steeply up but very rocky, with crevices between the rocks. It is part of the old Roman Road, I can never understand how the Roman soldiers got their gear up some of their roads, I can't imagine an ox getting up that one, I did some of it on hands and knees :!: But then I'm old :)
I reckon it is worth looking to see what cyclists do at that point, they may carry their bikes but I doubt it, I'm sure there must be a route that is not so steep and less likely to induce pressure sores. I'm not sure what your take on cobbles is, for the London Marathon they put mats down but that is for athletes in a hurry.
Whatever you decide,
Bom caminho

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
