Hi everyone, I'm planning on walking the Camino del Norte in April/May next year but would like to be able to Skype back home to Australia. Does anybody know of a SIM card I can get over in France or Spain which includes DATA usage?
The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Like here in Aus most Spanish networks are 3G capable and data is either included or can be added to pre-paid sim cards. Last time we were in Pamplona we just shopped around the various mobile phone stores and found one that had the best plan (they are always changing) for us. Both data and phone calls (including calls back to Australia) were very well priced.
I assume that when you arrive in Spain you've allowed a few days to get over get lag and so use some of this time to shop around.
I'm not sure what sort of device you are using (eg laptop, tablet, smartphone) but if your device uses a mini-sim just be sure to check that you have the right size sim card. I also suggest that you take your device to the store (charged and ready for use) to test that the data is activated and working.
We totally understand your excitement. I am excited for you and we have never met! I did the Camino Norte last May, the concern for my family was how would they get in touch with me if they needed to. I bought a pay-as-you-go phone from Orange (a Spanish cell company) It cost €30 for the phone but that included €10 of money on the phone. With that money on the phone I could call inside of Spain or text. But to call home to Canada I got a five euro calling card from Orange which gave me 150-200 minutes talking time to Canada. I used Skype voice at a few of the hostels when I found Wi-Fi but not having to search for Wi-Fi and still being being able to keep in touch was invaluable.
Have fun with the anticipation. For most of us, once you walk, you just want to walk again.
Planning on walking Norte-Primitivo starting about June 10, 2025.
Are the albergues very busy at that time and also what will the weather be?
I did this the end of August and September of 2017 and...
