Elevation map shows this is really steep! What’s the best way from downtown Hondarribia up there? Then wish me luck on the Purgatorio—I am a nervous wreck.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

there is only one way, follow the arrows past the church out of town and up the hill. it's steep, but doable. hard part is pushing on once you get there!

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
thanks everyone. I was so concerned with starting that I messed up the ending (of the Purgatorio) and ended up in ugly Lezo, LOL followed the yellow arrows!

From Dave* who writes guidebooks and who recently traveled del Norte: "It sure looks like they've re-routed the 'official' route in Stage 1 through Leko, instead of staying at the high level until the final descent to Pasaia. I don't get it. They've also wiped out the old yellow arrows, at least near the turn-off. My recommendation is to ignore the yellow arrows calling for that detour through Lekos. If you can handle an extra kilometer and a bit more up-and-down, stay with the GR into Pasaia. If you can't, follow the old Camino by following the GR until it forks left uphill soon after the Leko split. Instead, follow the trail into the trees. Eventually, it'll dump you out on a paved road. Turn left onto that road and stick with it for a bit. When it makes a hairpin turn to the left, go straight onto a minor paved road. You'll be seeing old yellow arrows at this point." *Sorry, Dave, I don't know your last name.

Thanks! I’ll do this next time LOL if they haven’t messed it up again. Glad to know it wasn’t my bad.

There is a well marked path out of Hondarribia. You can get onto it on a path that leads past the Santa Engraziago Hermita which is near a four-way roundabout just south of and below the old city. If you get the app Buen Camino, it's all set out for you there.
Don't be nervous about the walk. Start early and take your time. It's a climb but it's like eating an elephant; one bite at a time.
