Time of past OR future Camino
Camino Francės
I have done some research but anyone out there with a good recommendation to travel from Madrid to Coimbra. Prefer to not stay in Madrid as I have been there numerous times. Flt arrives in Madrid 13.25 late April and I wish to leave forY Coimbra that afternoon. Thanks in advanced
Marianne

Probably a flight to Porto or Lisbon then train to Coimbra. Is there a reason that you are flying to Spain instead of Portugal?

Rome2Rio is a good first step for finding travel options between two places:

Ooof, that’s a journey. Easiest and fastest would be to fly to Porto or Lisbon and then take a bus. If you don’t want fly, there’s a ALSA bus that goes to Viseu, then a Rede one to Coimbra. It’s about 10 hours and overnight, so I can’t really recommend thta. But that’s the winter schedule and spring may have more options.

My wife and I stopped overnight in Madrid on our way to Coimbra in 2023. We flew into Lisbon, caught the metro to Oriente station, then train to Coimbra. The journey was complicated by a train strike at the time we travelled, but it worked. Bus might also work, but we never took one from the airport, always from one of the other interchange stations.

We also flew into Porto and took the metro into the interchange station at Campanha, then the bus to Coimba when we did some other travel. Train will also work from Campanha to Coimbra.

I looked at doing the bus from Madrid, and it could work, but it seemed to be a little more complicated than flying into Porto or Lisbon.

Coming from Australia, there isn't a lot that goes to Lisbon or Porto without going through Madrid or one of the other Spanish airports. We tend to fly into London because I have family to visit in England, and even then the One World alliance will take us through Madrid.

I understand that, but surely you can buy a through ticket that connects in Madrid?

Fail to prepare? reduce your risk by buying this book full of practical info.

It is, but I might have thought you were suggesting not flying through Spain, but avoiding that and flying to Lisbon or Porto from a hub in the Middle East. TAP do that, and if you leave Australia on a Star Alliance airline it might be offered. The One World alliance includes, for example, Iberia and Air France, so you are more likely to be offered flights through CDG and Madrid.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
