Not sure if this is the right thread, but...
I was reading my diary from last year (Vezelay to SDC) and came across the following. It was written after I had a been a lone (happy) guest at Posada El Pescador, in Oreña.
“I need to make a point about some of the most hospitable hosts and enjoyable evenings bring with older folk who have done this for decades and are now slipping off peoples’ lists. There is a sadness that when they go they will be replaced by commoditised, properly trained and commercially oriented people. I’m thinking not only of last night but also La Petite Preugne where Joe and I stayed, the Chateau at Brouquereyran, and Pascal at Osserain, all in France. People who share not only their home but their meals and their lives with a succession of pilgrims who will stay only one night.” I might add Fatima at CR Iketxe.
I’ve been wondering what has happened with COVID, have they folded up their tents? Has a generation passed? I loved being their guests.
I often think of this when I hear the opinion that the “Camino Spirit” resides in dormitories or Albergues.
So I’m wondering if we are seeing a closing of a chapter?
Anyone know?
John
