I happened to look this up only recently for myself when someone started a forum thread about walking from Nuremberg.

I think we discussed these items before. The 16th century is of course already the Modern Era and no longer the Middle Ages.

These items are prestige objects that were kept by the Praun family in their collection of relics and wondrous things. The family was Protestant. The museum writes that it is interesting to note that the Praun family from Nuremberg belonged to the Protestant church. Nevertheless, a pilgrimage [to Santiago de Compostela] was a socially prestigious endeavour. The owner Stephan III Praun travelled from Madrid to Santiago.

The shoes are described as alpargatas and as unworn and probably a souvenir from Spain.
 
Cant help but wonder, how warm,dry,weather proof the cloths were!
