Jill,
I have eaten lunch there. Simple meals are a good value at 6 euros. Breakfast is 3 euros and a bunk in a common dorm 6 euros. The hospitalero and his family last October were very friendly and welcoming. Peeked at the dorms and they are fine; if the parish albergue in nearby Granon was not so special I would happily stay at this youth hostel. For those who wish to sleep either in a bunk or bed and not on the floor as at Granon the albergue Nuestra Senora de Carrasquedo would be a good choice.
And it is on the fields, adjacent to a historic building. But is it on the Camino? I frankly don't remember it, but it is true that when I walked there, it was raining persistently, and my memories are a bit fuzzy. In the map, it seems out of the way to Redecilla.
The adjacent historic building is a redundant convent. You can freely visit the chapel and other spaces. The complex is on a gravel path in a wood less than 10 minutes walk from Granon. True it is not exactly on the CF but it is very close and easy to find. During both my mid-day visits the volunteer Granon parish hospitaleros also ate at this hostel since it was nearby and a good value.
Hi Margaret and Felipe, thank you very much for your replies. I was browsing booking.com for places to stay near Granon, and this albergue came up. Maybe others on the forum will stay here during the course of this year, so by the time I'm walking by in October there will be some reviews. According to Brierley it is 1.2 kms off-route, and 1.5 kms on google maps. It looks like a nice place to get away from the crowds for one night. (Not that that's a problem in October.) Jill
I stayed there some years ago, previous tenants, and it was fine. But why do you want to miss the very special albergue in Granon itself? As you have written yourself, over-crowding isn't a problem in October. Buen Camino, SY
