Al the Optimist has succumbed to the temptation of the Ryan Dare site

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
:) - and we have succumbed to Brittany Ferries sales talk for next year. However this time we will be taking the car so as to reach all those 'diversions' along the Norte/Primitivo which were just too far to get to when we walked. So - car to reach points along the way and then walk to places. a Camino fix?? We said before we left home this time that it was the last time we expected to walk into Santiago, but not necessarily the last time we are on the Camino or parts of it. Still pilgrims - as Fr Joe said in his homily at the English Mass.

Buen Camino Al

Well done Al and the 'tio's'! We keep saying, 'this is definitely the last one' .......but somehow, we keep falling for one more! Problem with us is that age is creeping up very, very fast!:(

Camino Inglés sounds wonderful. Buen Camino Al!

Me too Al! Returned in March and after reading all of these wonderful posts, especially the ones about all the other caminos, I started to feel the urge. Just told my hubby this morning...Now looking at how to fit it in between a work project and my first grandchild being born;)!

I had been back 19 days before giving in and booking for another quick fix.
Starting from Ferrol on September 3rd for Camino Ingles.
I love it that you are 'Ever the Optimist Al".....safe journey and hope all will be well for you when you leave to begin your next journey.,.....:)

Oh, you are so lucky Joe! Not having to put up with a Wednesfield lad! It has been suggested that some Midlanders might like to meet up, maybe in Brum. Interested?
I am just being curious here Al and Andy....but, where is Brum please. I have been reading a book about 'the Hidden World' by William Horwood (he wrote the Duncton Wood Series of books) and a lot of this is set in 'Brum'.......I realise that this question is right off the subject but thought I would be bold and ask anyway.....Smiles from Grey/Wet Western Australia..

Dialect word for Birmingham (Brummagem)

Perfect memento/gift in a presentation box. Engraving available, 25 character max.
I feel you need to have sympathy for us from the Antipodes as you walk- and carry the thought of us all in your back pack. (That should weigh you down a bit.) Generally, from this part of the world, we tend to book flights many months ahead to get affordable ones- and we can't just 'pop back' for a 'quickie' soon after our return home. Ok- so now I have made you feel suitably 'guilty' I will wish you Buen Camino!:)

In the local "Black Country" dialect people say "Yam" instead of "You are". As in "Yam a gud un yo om" meaning "You are a good person". Confused enough now?
Yep.....very confused but laughing as well. Now, as you probably guessed....I have another question...What is 'Black Country' ? If ever I get to travel over your way, I will have to call on you for 'lessons in local conversation' so that I will be well equipped to understand what is being said.....

You won't understand him. Al must be using translation software ;)

The Black Country is the area immediately north of Birmingham in England's West midlands, which was described thus because of the enormous amount of black smoke hanging over the whole place because of the large number of iron foundries, smelting businesses and other manufacturing works which sprung up at the start of the industrial revolution in England in the late 1700's. The whole of the black country and Birmingham indeed, kick-started worldwide industrialisation and was referred to as the workplace of the world So,are we proud? I,m not too sure!! Anyway todays lecture over-back to the Camino. ( B.T.W. both places still have their own distinctive accents-but especially the Black Country-Is'nt that right Al?)

I know that we have diverted somewhat from the Camino, but it has been a VERY interesting diversion --- Thank you for the small history lesson. Cheers.

OK so I feel sympathy for you Maggie. As I do for all who have such a long and expensive journey to enjoy what is on my doorstep. But the same obstacles are there for us Poms who want to visit the Antipodes? No I won't carry the weight in my backpack but just for you I will raise a glass when I get there. How's that? ;)
Fair call Al :p Instead of raising a drink, perhaps you can climb to the highest tower you can find in Santiago, and yell a greeting across the oceans and mountains? One more climb after all those hills along the Camino Ingles shouldn't be too difficult...

Yo mean ay that rite do yo? Enough! Sorry! Joe is right though. Each town in the area has it's own variation and if you meet someone from only five miles away it can be difficult to understand them as as well s different accents they have different colloquialisms. Also people are fiercely proud of which village/town they were born in and when prompted will readily drop into their version.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
