The Consortium of de la Montaña Central de Asturias yesterday presented a guide that includes, for the first time, the entire stretch of the el Salvador which lies in the Principality of Asturias and Leon (59 kilometers in the province).
This publication, of which 5,000 copies have been published, is a guide for pilgrims who want to travel the Camino de Santiago across the Cantabrian Mountains. Thus, the itinerary of the route (one of the paths considered historical) passes through the towns of Leon La Virgen del Camino, La Robla de La Virgen del Camino, La Robla y Arbás del Puerto and municipalities of Asturia, Mieres, Pola de Lena, Pajares and Oviedo - and from there, bound for Santiago.
Why this return to Oviedo, where pilgrims may continue to Galicia through Astorga and Ponferrada?
This deviation has its origin in medieval pilgrims, from the French Way, who decided to go up (from Leon are 121 kilometers) to Oviedo to visit the cathedral of San Salvador and its relics. Not surprisingly, there is a saying 'Who's not going to Santiago and Salvador, honors the servant and not the Lord. "
The guide has been developed with a view "eminently practical. Thus, the end of each of the stages are planned in places where there is a hostel for pilgrims and listed the variants documented since the Middle Ages, advising the election of one stage or another depending on the time of the year in which do the Camino.
A total of six stages, for which collects all information. It is, for example, a description of the route, with reviews of the landscape, heritage and monuments in each area and also provides mapping information and profiles of each stage, along with practical information for pilgrims.
The presentation of the guide was attended by CEO of Tourism in Asturias, Elisa Llaneza, the mayor of Pola de Gordon, Francisco Castanon, and the councilman of Culture of Oviedo, José Suárez Arias Cachero.
They highlighted the importance of such publications to boost the Camino del Salvador and expressed their intention to foster collaboration between Asturias and Leon to drive this route and make it known and recognized in future years.
CAMINO DEL SALVADOR
Leon to Oviedo. The route covers 151 kilometers (of which 59 per lands of Castile and Leon). There are pilgrims who choose to depart from the French route and go to Oviedo to visit the cathedral of San Salvador.
Municipalities. The route passes by 17 places with services, although only nine have some form of accommodation.
Hostels. Not counting the two that are in Leon and Oviedo, the Camino del Salvador has four shelters in Buiza, Pajares, Pola de Lena and Mieres del Camino
