2022 Steps

Spirit of the Camino (Nick)
Time of past OR future Camino
Some in the past; more in the future!
Just for fun, here’s my year in steps. This is the highest daily average of steps that I’ve had in a calendar year.

35F0598A-13E0-43B3-9A38-3E643A79D50F.jpeg

Worst month: February, when I spent most of the month in the so-called ‘closed loop’ of the Winter Olympics in China in temperatures as low as -23 degrees Celsius.

Best month: October, thanks to walking the Via di Francesco. Other camino spikes can be seen throughout the year too.

Does anyone else want to share their step profile for 2022?

Very Ivar-like 😀

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
And mine…Sept/Oct are low because I did not wear my Fitbit while walking the Primitivo and San Salvador Caminos so crude guess 650,000 additional steps…or an additional ~1,780 per day 😂

Average 27,233 steps a day +/5 steps a day for precision error 😂🤣

Walking sure is fun!

I set a minimum target of 50 km per week (not counting steps around the house). In 2021, I exceeded it every single week. In 2022, I decided to be less compulsive about it, so I missed 2 or 3 weeks but my totals were probably similar. For 2023, I will continue the plan. To walk 50 km takes me 10-12 hours/week, so it is good that I am retired!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

I changed over from a Fitbit to a Garmin after my Camino del Norte in June/July so only have statistics since August but here goes for the last 5 months of 2022:

We use a period instead of a comma😉. 2,300 km not including my 700 km Camino.

My daily goal is 20,000 steps per day which I often can make since I have a dog.

Mid October to first week November were low as I was trekking in Nepal. I was amazed at how few steps we did in a 6-8 hour day of walking but then again we were at high altitude 🙃

Hi Nick -

Great thread! Thanks! It’s going to be terrific to see all the stats posted!

Here are mine:

My steps for April and May reflect the fact that I walked the VDLP and the Sanabres until just before Ourense.

The low monthly averages reflect way too much time on the sofa, my nose in a good book, with NeeNee the cat on my lap.

This thread has inspired me to “get on your (my) feet, get up and make it happen”, from the excellent Gloria Estefan song!

Thanks again and cheers from Oz -

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
What fun to see what others have achieved!
My daily average for 2022 was 12,895 steps.
Wow! That’s over 4 million steps for the year.
I can’t work out how to make my phone show that lovely monthly graph but it would show a rather slothful beginning to the year and an increase after I committed to walking VDLP/Sanabres in autumn - and of course then the actual Camino.
Thanks @C clearly for sharing your weekly at home goal. Since coming back I found I have been able to walk just under 50 km per week - but not every week - in my attempt to keep up some of my Camino fitness.

Thank you for a very informative and motivational thread!
Apologies for the old style records: the annual running log summary is an excel worksheet I keep from a daily calendar; the monthly calendar summary for 2022 is in the lower right corner. I started logging running miles 40 years ago this year (age 34YO and quit smoking that year). I upped my biking and hiking/walking as running became less doable. Now I'm mostly hiking/walking and biking. I've never done steps; the conversion factors are to jogging miles what seemed to relate to my exertion level and performance years ago, and I haven't modified them with age (under the unscientific theory that as I age the same physical benefit probably accrues relative to the distance as converted). I have found logging this activity a great motivator. May it continue a few more years!

Just under 20k average per day which I am pretty pleased about as didn’t do any caminos or major walks. I just do a lot of walking as I don’t own a car and walk everywhere under 3 miles. It’s amazing how much the steps can add up.

Did 26k ‘today’ made up of 6k 0015-0100 this morning walking home from a station as local station shut after day out in London (nice to wake up with 6k steps done already for the day!), and then a 45 min walk into my local town and back today and some walking around town. 19km without really even noticing it!
