The Church recorded over 125 000 pilgrims in 2008, a number that was only exceeded in the last two Holy Years of 1999 (154,163) and 2004 (179.944 pilgrims). On average there were 343 pilgrims per day.
Between January 1 and December 31 the Archbishop issued 125,133 Compostelas. 11,107 more than in 2007 according to data provided by the delegate Monsignor Julián Barrio for these duties, Genaro Cebrián.
The influx of pilgrims in the capital rose by 9.7% during 2008. Compared with 2000, is has grown by 127.5% and with 1996, 438.9% ... And so forth.
The total of pilgrims estimated by the church for the 2010 Jubilee of between 225,000 and 260,000 seems an increasingly accurate estimate.
Despite having already entered the global users of the route last year, Cebrián not yet completed a breakdown by gender, nationalities or ages. "We are closing the balance these days," he says.
