On the evening of August 15th of the year 778, after a failed attempt to capture Zaragoza from the Moors, the rearguard of Charlemagne's army was ambushed and annihilated at the Pyrenean pass.
Roland, Margrave of Brittany and cousin of Charlemagne was killed. (The battle is treated in the 11th-century Chanson de Roland, in which the attackers are Moors and the rear guard is led by Charlemagne's nephew Roland.)
They say that on a misty night in the woods around Roncevalles, you can still hear Roland's horn - Oliphant - calling for help!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
