    Use Albergue before getting credential?

The Jesus y Maria albergue has credentials and will give you a feel for the big albergues you may come across. There are "warehouse" style albergues (like JyM) along the way. It will give you a feel for what kind of albergue suits you. If you can handle JyM, you'll be golden. If not there are a...

    Low-hanging fruit

I recall that between SJPdP and Roncesvalles there was a small orchard planted specifically for pilgrims. At the time (spring of 2017) there was no fruit on the trees and it was signposted. The signs may be gone now. In the case there is an invitation to take fruit - go for it, otherwise you...

    Water, water...

Let weather forecasts be part of that calculus. Crossing from SJPdP to Roncesvalles I went through 6L of water. It was sunny and incredibly windy. All of the water I drank was stripped away from my skin (no bathroom break even with all that water...) I kept 2 1L bottles with me and refilled when...

    The final few kms

In the fall of 2017 a bridge was closed for maintenance. The entrance route was detoured for what felt like an extra 7 or 8 km. (Likely less, but it felt much longer.) It definitely wasn't more scenic. It did get us to the cathedral though. I suppose the urban crawl is just part of the journey...

    Night Hikes / Star Gazing

I have done very early departures from albergues many times. Normally the drive to leave early was the forecast of a scorching day to come or an inability to sleep. The big issue that I have encountered was finding the arrows on very dark nights. I made the trek from Ages to Burgos in the dark...

    Walking with headphones?

I wear a single ear bud. It allows me to switch my attention from the podcast I'm likely listening to, to the sounds of the Camino. If a conversation is offered, the ear bud comes out. Not for everyone, but it works for me. G

    Ordering beer in Spain

A cana is a normal sized draught beer. Generally speaking this is what most people would order (30cL). I have ordered a cana grande to get a large beer. Along the Frances, the bar keepers have (I'm certain) hard it all and know what you mean, regardless of the phrasing that you use. I...

Food to bring to Spanish friend from US

And as odd as it may seem, a decent wine (BC, California or Ontario) may provide some interesting comparison to the fantastic local wines. Have a night of wine tastings!

Food to bring to Spanish friend from US

A different one admittedly. Summer Savory. It used to be a very northeastern N.A. spice/herb and is still not well known outside certain areas but it can be found if you look for it. Wonderful flavor for sauces and sfuffings. Any barbecue rubs also come to mind. G

    The Idea of Camino

This is so true. It may seem that each day starts with an uphill climb, but by rhe end of the days walking, none of that matters. What matters (to me) is the overall experience. The events combine to an experience. Live the experience. Remember the events. Judge the totality. My guess is the...

    The Way 2 - Characters

That was Captain Henri Sébastien. He would be a great return character.

    The Way 2 - Characters

I'd love an update on Ishmael's son. That might be a great side plot!

Can I do the camino at 16

Had I known when I was 16 that the Camino existed, I'd likely try to do it myself. As noted before, ask questions (even hard ones) and listen. When in need ask for help. If someone appears to need help, offer it willingly. There are amazing people on Camino. You will end up with friends from...

    Embarrassing moments

Have you done something embarrassing while on Camino? My worst moment was in San Bol. One of my Camino family members asked the rest of us if we should walk early as the temperature was supposed to soar the next day. We agreed to wake at 4 am and start the stage. I woke at 4 as requested...

    The Way 2 - Characters

I am a self admitted fan of The Way. No apologies for that. We know that Jack, Jost, Tom and presumably Daniel will return. Are there secondary characters that you would like to see in the next film? I'd love to see Ishmael or Henri Sébastien find a place in the plot line. Thoughts? Gord

    Soft tips for new walkers

#?a If your familia is developing, discuss tomorrow's destination or lunch stop. You are unlikely to all walk at the same pace, at least you will be able to meet during the day. #?b Don't forget to look up. Spain has some beautiful birds! #?c Shade. Seek out shade for your rest breaks. #?d...

Ball walker or heel walker? Fun, fiction and facts

A strange sidebar to this. Ball walking in toddlers can be an indicator of autism spectrum disorder. This is according to my son's pediatrician. The theory behind this is that it helps reduce the amount of sensory input the child receives.
