I don't know of any other places in Deba, but Albergue Izarbide is another 5km in Ibiri. If you are going to stay there, reserve ahead because after Ibiri there doesn't seem to be anything until Markina. Their website has the number to reserve: https://izarbideaterpetxea.wixsite.com/izarbide/en
You can save a little time by taking the metro across Bilbao. Not sure of the details, but I remember that Efren Gonzalez did this in his Camino del Norte 2019 Youtube Vlog. There might be other city/suburban areas where you can do the same. Avoiding these long stretches of hard surfaces will...
Thank you everyone for all of this great information and @C clearly for all of your hard work and time on this.
Also, there is a train station in Sahagun so it is very easy to get back to Madrid to catch a flight home or possibly to the starting point of another Camino.
I have only passed through Valladolid by train, but there is a Christopher Columbus museum there. The middle of the Meseta seems like an odd place for a museum for someone who spent much of his time on the ocean, but he was living there when he died.
According to Gronze, the Polideportivo de Cercedilla is not open on weekends, and mats are provided to sleep on. Also according to the comments, you cannot sleep there until the sports center is no longer being used at 21:30 and must leave early when it opens.
Tres Cantos doesn't seem to be the most scenic town, but it does have cafes and stores so Hotel Jardin de Tres Cantos will work for me.
It looks like there is a bridge to get across the M-607 to get into Tres Cantos at Ronda de Europa. It will be the road that comes out right next to the Hotel...
I'm going to stop at Decathlon at C. del Arenal while walking through Madrid to pick up some trekking poles. Last trip to Madrid my checked bag didn't make the transfer in Dublin, probably due to the short layover over time.
I had hoped to walk the Camino de Madrid this past summer but decided to do something in the US because of covid. I ended up bicycling the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal towpath instead, which I really enjoyed but was quite different from walking a Camino. I'm still looking to do the...
Unfortunately, laying people off and expecting those remaining to do more seems to be all too common these days.
If I were between jobs this time of year, I would walk some of the southern Caminos, probably starting with the Via de la Plata.
It's interesting to hear about the Camino from a hospitalero's perspective.
When I walked the Via Romana from Calzada del Coto to Reliegos 2 years ago I only saw 1 other pilgrim all day. Glad to hear CdlH is getting so many people!
I did a segway tour in Madrid a few years ago. They offer different tours, some in as little as an hour. You can see a lot more of the city than if you were trying to do it on foot in the same amount of time.
Yes, this was the one next to the train station. I had a beer there before getting on the train at the end of my 2017 Camino. When I returned to Fromista in 2019 to complete my Camino, it was destroyed. It was a cool place for an Albergue!
In July 2019 the monument was in really bad shape. As you can see from the photo it was fenced off and we couldn't even walk up to it.
It was a beautiful day and a great view, but I remember seeing the city from up there and being disappointed that the journey was almost over.
I would never actually walk a Camino barefoot or in minimalist footwear, but I have integrated it and other feet strengthening exercises into my training. Foot pain has not been an issue since!
I got the idea for this after reading Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest...
@Robo
I'm also a fan of foam rolling so I purchased a Tiger Tail Roadster for my last Camino - https://tigertailusa.com/product/the-roadster/
At 200g it won't save you any weight but it would save you some space.
Unfortunately, I never got to use it there since it was in a checked bag with...
Thanks for posting this Duane, nice write-up and pics! I have plans to walk the GGW this summer if conditions permit.
We will be spending some extra time in Scotland to do some more sightseeing, so if the weather is good I would like to try hiking up Ben Nevius.
