    Tarmac percentages on the VdlP

There is very little road where you cannot walk off to the side on real dirt. I'd get the trail version of the shoes. I did the VDLP in Vasque hiking shoes ( got about 1300km out of those), the Levante/Invierno in Salewa boots (overkill) and this next Camino will be Inov-8 hiking shoes. I've...

    Starting with a Rest Day?

I have started caminos in Sevilla and Valencia but tend to spend a couple of days playing tourist and sleeping to recuperate from flying from Australia. It may be the first and last time you visit this place so make sure you make the time to visit the really essential sights. Last time we flew...

A slow Camino Mixto May 2025

@Jim Porter https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/camino-mixto-mar-2019.60741/ is my Invierno thread from 2019. @It56NY I agree about Ray and Rosa. I've already emailed them to see if they expect to be home around our dates. @TuiMarie We'll probably bump into each other around...

A slow Camino Mixto May 2025

Our first week will be incredibly slow ie Centro->Fuencarral ->Tres Cantos -> Colmenar Viejo ->Manzanares--> Navacerrada ->Las Deshesas -> Valsain. But we have the time to do it that way as we have 60 days up our sleeve. Barrie is a snorer so I'm sticking to smaller albergues where possible...

A slow Camino Mixto May 2025

It's been a long time between Caminos with the last effort being the Levante and Invierno in 2019. Barrie and I are older and fatter, and he has had some health issues in-between so if I am going to plan a slightly hilly Camino (Madrid/Salvador/Primitivo) *cough, cough* then short stages are the...

    Bears on the Salvador?

I don't expect to see a bear although I would be absolutely chuffed to come across any evidence of their existence even if it is just a pile of bear poop. Most of the actual bear photos on iNat show a bear up the side of a steep rocky slope.

    Bears on the Salvador?

We have 70 days to do a Camino Madrid/Salvador/Primitivo combo. So we have the luxury of having the time to walk shorter stages. So the cameras will be less onerous. My partner is the professional photographer; I'm the keen amateur and iNaturalist addict. I could take my bridge camera, a Nikon...

    Bears on the Salvador?

I'm checking out iNaturalist and the Salvador passes between 2 bear areas. There are observations within cooee of La Pola de Gordón and up towards the Reserva de la Biosfera el Alto Bernesga. Anybody seen any bear prints or scat or actual bears on the Camino itself? We are a couple of wildlife...

    What's in bloom in May?

Early June on the caminos starting in Andalusia.

My head is about to explode with questions & options

If the Primitivo appeals I would suggest a Leon starting point and that can be completed in your time frame. We are actually starting in Madrid in May so if you do this one we could potentially bump into each other in June. What appeals about the Primitivo for you? How far do you think you will...

ETIAS - when does it start?

Is there an actual start date yet? The ETIAS website states it is not yet in action.

    Well, it's happened

Invierno is lovely if you want to end in SdC.

    What Garmin are you wearing?

I've got an Instinct 2X which is solar. But the display is in black and white. But that makes it less obtrusive too. It has a little red light torch on it, a barometer and I can control my podcasts.

    Camino De Invierno Survey

The group question doesn't account for couples well. Looking back it was the nature that I remember best. Very few birds which surprised me but we did find reptiles, deer, evidence of pigs and wolves. And butterflies! But we are wildlife nerds :)

    Starting in Toledo March 2025

Toledo is a gorgeous city and we ended up spending 3 days there mostly because the Museum was closed on a Monday. So check opening times!

Small (4-5 kg which is about 10 pounds) dog -- should I bring her?

My dogs loved the doggy hotel. They get spoilt rotten , walks in new places with new smells and they meet a whole bunch of new buddies. These days we get a house-sitter because it saves us thousands of dollars as we have 2 dogs and 2 cats. They get to stay in their own home and they get to...

How do Your Camino Amigos influence your route?

On my first Camino which I did solo, I walked half of it with a fellow Pilgrim who walked the same speed as me and we shared a similar sense of humour and music. And he is a Spaniard who lives in the UK. The Camino provided! I had a rest day in Galisteo when he caught up with his brother for a...

Illnesses on the camino; It cools my jets. You?

I solve that issue by walking less common routes. If you have company at all it is well spread out. Especially as a female where you often have a bathroom to yourself.
