    Vocabulario del camino

Emilio Escudero, board member, hospitalero trainer and general angel, has put together an entire manual of the history, culture and vocabulary of the Camino for the American Pilgrims on the Camino. It is called Basic Spanish for the Camino and it's posted on the APOC, Northern California website...

Where to spend a week between Santiago de Compostela and Lisbon

The Picos de Europa is an amazing area if you have a car. Not sure if public transport is available to the area.

    Accommodation from Sarria

Consider staying at the Xunta albergue in Ribadiso. Plenty of beds available most nights and it's such a lovely place to stay!

    Zamora or Avila?

After a few weeks serving as an hospitalero, I'm going to visit Salamanca on my way to Madrid. I have time for one stop on the way and am considering either Zamora or Avila. Looking for fan favorites and why. All other suggestions are welcome, too!

    Ahhh massage, recommendations?

I treated myself to a night at the Hotel Spa Ciudad de Astorga, across the street from the Palace of Gaudí. It was perfectly dreamy. Had the pool and hot tub to myself and then a great massage. Most comfy bed I've ever slept in.

    Is this crazy?

Our fellow pilgrims have said it all. Halfway through Day 1 you will understand almost everything. Must say how glad I was to carry a pair of walking sandals (Keens, in my case) that I changed into every day 2/3 of the way through the day, along with a fresh pair of socks. ¡Buen Camino, dear...

    Waist/front Pack

Can't agree more! A hydration tube is so easy and the bottle can be back there anywhere. The tube with mouthpiece clips to your pack straps and the bottle can be any old lightweight disposable bottle.

Recommendations for a sunhat which doesn’t make my head sweat.

Clip it to the outside of your pack. And as you may know, anything goes on the Camino when it comes to fashion, and it's so refreshing to not care what we look like. You'll also strike up some fun conversations!

    Train bookings

Is it necessary to book a train from Santiago to Madrid at the end of October more than a day or two in advance?

    La Tuna in Santiago

I was studying at la Universidad de Valencia in 1981 and the tunas serenaded us under our second (first) story window. It was magical. We ended up bar hopping with them. Thank goodness I don't remember details except that it was LOTS of fun!

    Language questions

Okey dokey... pretty easy answer to the poles question. Sounds like the actor/actriz terminology is undergoing an evolutionary process. Thanks, all!

    Language questions

Can someone tell me what Spanish word is used in Spain to refer to hiking poles? Bastones? Palos? Also, as women in tv and movies generally are now referred to as "actores" rather than "actrices", would I refer to Penelope Cruz as "una actor"? "Una actora"?

Experience staying at the Monastery of Saint Benedict in Estella?

Hope you are able to stay at Monasterio San Benito. We did in 2016 and it was such a highlight of my Camino!
