Right quad pain, ok to push through or something to be worried about?

I have, on a number of occasions, had severe quad pain (cramp type pain) specifically when walking downhill that doesn’t seem to be a problem when walking uphill and it was related to hydration. While at the pharmacy, get some electrolytes to add to your water and increase your water intake. And...

    Liner Socks

I started my walk with nylon liners under my socks but in the end just put some ‘foot glide’ on my feet each day and wore Steigen anti blister running socks (Lycra & nylon blend) They are my sock of choice for all walking and hiking that I do. They fit snug and don’t slide.

    Tattoo

My family are much the same but honestly, who cares! One little yellow arrow is hardly offensive. I warned my husband I was getting one before I came home and he was not happy, but I’m a 50+ woman who’s quite capable of making my own choices and I was very proud of what I had achieved (flying...

    Accommodation in Porto

It was lovely! Everything I needed and wanted before I started walking. Looking forward to going back again one day. Drinking my morning coffee, sitting at the window watching the rising sun glistening on Porto was worth it alone!

    Accommodation in Porto

I stayed at The House of Sandeman. Was fabulous. There are also private rooms, other wise male, female or mixed bunk rooms. They do a €10 pilgrims meal in the evening but also very close to restaurants etc. Beautiful views of the river from the common area particularly at sunrise and sunset...

    Tattoo

I had mine done at Ethan Clay tattoo studio. There are deals for pilgrims.

    Route opinion

Nowhere specifically. I had planned to take a rest day but found I didn’t need it. I walked a couple shorter days instead. Everywhere I walked through and stayed was lovely. Allow time to explore the Fortaleza de Valenca before crossing the bridge into Tui (which has a lovely old town area). I...

    Hostels in Porto

How long are you in Porto? I arrived late and stayed in the hotel directly across from the airport. The following day I caught the train into Porto and stayed at The Sandeman for 2 nights, it’s excellent and I highly recommend it.

Safety concerns: First time walking Camino Portuguese as a female traveller

I walked the Portuguese Camino last September by myself. There were many solo, or pairs of women walking. I had no issues what so ever. Use normal safety measures as you would anywhere.

    Route opinion

No problem. On day 10 I should have walked to Arcade which would have made the next day to Combarro a bit shorter.

    Route opinion

I did a similar route but stayed on the coastal until Caminha. You can even out the distance of some of your stages by staying at smaller towns either before or after the typical stage ends, which will also often make it easier to find accommodation.

visiting from australia. where should we fly into

I flew from Adelaide with Qatar. Stopped in Doha then on to Madrid. I then made a seperate booking to fly on to Porto where I started my Camino. At the end, I caught a train from SdC back to Madrid. I looked at carriers that could get me there with the least amount of stops. I’d be tempted to...

Pilgrims from Australia and the wonderful New Zealand

I walked the Portuguese Camino this September. My flight was the most expensive part but all up I thought $5000 was pretty reasonable for a 4 week trip to Europe! I have every intention of doing it again. The Heysen Trail is 1,200km (not 2,500) and is beautiful but very isolated in many...

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

I highly advise dressing warm for the boat. I wore my rain jacket even though it wasn’t raining, just to provide some protection from the wind.

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

I booked the boat online a couple days before hand with Amare Turismo Nautico.

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

I enjoyed my stay at Herbon monastery. I caught the 0800 speedboat from Vilaneuva de Arousa to Pontecesures, which was quicker than the 0700 big slow boat. We stopped for coffee after arrival, I walked to Padron with friends then out to the Monastery and was there by 11am. I was 5th in line. A...

    Family "Vacation" Ideas

I understand your dilemma, I have just completed my first Camino and can’t wait to do another. But I also have family to consider. Family time is precious and wonderful memories are made on family holidays. Do a holiday together then plan you next Camino. I’m not sure you would be able to really...

    Herbon

The Herbon Monastry does not take bookings. It opens at 4pm but when I was there in September, people were lining up from late morning. I arrived at 11am and was 5th in line, pilgrims continued to arrive pretty consistently. My guide book stated it had beds for 20 but a sign on the door stated...

Advice on phone carriers and banking options for Australians on the VdlP

My phone is with Boost and they have an International pack, $40 for 14 days. Not the cheapest option around but I didn’t have to worry about swapping sims, changing phone numbers and had way more data than I ever needed. I just used my phone exactly as I would at home, except maintained contact...
