Also make sure that the road you take varies between smooth asphalt to very rocky, uneven and loose gravel. Add to that slippery dust, rain and mud. You are likely to have any, or all, of these as you cross the mountains. It is nothing like a treadmill.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to my original question.
Having considered these comments, and quite a lot of other research elsewhere, we have taken the plunge and decided to walk the WHW in early July.
As it's a few years since we last backpacked in summer, and the terrain being...
Thanks for the advice.
I realise now that I forgot to mention that we were planning on using an agency to arrange accommodation and bag transfer along the route. Our days camping days are over. We've been there and done that stuff.🤗
My wife and I are from the UK and have walked the Camino Frances from St Jean twice and the Camino Portuguese from Lisbon once. We carried all our stuff for the whole distance on each occasion. We did not find any part of the trails too arduous at any point.
We are currently planning to walk...
Ah yes. But if the sun had been shining it would have been a glorious walk across the heathland. Even with the rain and mud it was a nice route.
The walk alongside the road was still tedious even with the sun shining. If it had rained on that route it would have been doubly tedious, ugh!😥
You're correct. It was a very sticky clay that weighed an extraordinary amount. We also had to stop frequently to try to clean it off with our walking poles.
But it was a very nice route to Vilar de Mazarife. Much nicer than following the N120 to Viladangos as we did last year. That was very...
Hi. .....and sorry for the delay in responding to your request, due to a short period of (Non Covid-19 related) illness.
The blog is available at this link "Yorkshire Camino 2019". This will take you to a version that is in correct, ascending, date order of posts. Normally Wordpress publishes...
Hey! Can I drop in on your blog as well.
We're aiming to do the Madrid followed by the Santiago - Finisterre - Muxia triangle in September. It would be great to follow how you get on along the Madrid.
We've already done the Frances (twice) and the Portuguese from Lisbon, so we're now trying...
We live in Halifax, very close to Manchester, and have started both of our Camino Frances journeys by train.
Not particularly cheap, but a very relaxing way to start.
We've used intercity to London, overnight there, followed by Eurostar to Paris and TGV to Bayonne for another overnight. The...
Are you starting in May or July please?
I'm in the UK and we write dates as dd/mm/yy but the USA use mm/dd/yy so there can be confusion with certain combinations.
We're planning to walk the Madrid in late August or early September next year and I'm interested in all postings on the Camino...
Hi. You'll find it HERE , hopefully. I've tagged the link so that it should display in ascending date order, rather than the default 'newest first' order. If you want any more info just let me know.
Another "Not a pilgrimage" route, but one we entitled "Our Yorkshire Camino" when we walked it in May 2018 having previously walked the Frances (twice) and the Portuguese from Lisbon in previous years.
This route is a combination of 'The Wolds Way' followed by a short section of the 'Cleveland...
