Food on La Meseta beyond abysmal

Some of the top restaurants in Spain are located in town in the Meseta.

    Subsistence in SJPDP

There are a number of shops on the main "pilgrim route" walking out of town after you cross the bridge heading west. They are open on Sunday for the tourist trade and open early in the morning to offer freshly baked baguettes and will prepare sandwiches for you as well. I suspect the Lidl store...

If you get lost on the trail answer your phone!

Currently, the son of a good friend is hiking the AT in Tennessee. She is frantically trying to reach him but there is no cellphone service in the mountains due to Hurricane Francine.

Top 15 Small Churches On The Camino

Kevin, That is a wonderful list and your descriptions are very inciteful. There are so many other smaller chapels with local distinctions; like the chapels in SJPdP, O'Cebreiro and San Juan de la Pena. I have always been amazed at the exacting skills of the Templar masons, they possessed an...

LIVE from the Camino Gun fire? Cannon? Fireworks??

A little farther south there are marble pits that use explosives. BTW, lots of activity in Padron on the 28th, la Vuelta is coursing around the town all day long.

    Avoiding currency exchange fees

Totally agree with the comment about not using a debit card. I never want to repeat the time I was nicked/hacked when I accidentally used one of mine for a meal purchase in Burgos and subsequently had to cancel my account and begin my credit card journey anew. Thankfully, I had an understanding...

    Avoiding currency exchange fees

Thank you Paul for mentioning that imperative! Doing the tap function would be much like leaving your card in the ATM and walking off without it.

    Avoiding currency exchange fees

I have been fortunate enough to have a Carte Bancaire, so I never pay fees. I was just guessing it was a few Euros.

    Avoiding currency exchange fees

Yes, much like in the US. The fabled warning is always do your transaction outside of a "bank" that is currently open for business because if your card is rejected or eaten by the machine, you can usually go inside and get the situation corrected. An ATM on the front of some random shop on a...

    Avoiding currency exchange fees

Assuming you are talking about the USD versus Euros, simply find the best card or bank that charges the smallest fee. If you are traveling in Europe you will need to have Euros in your pocket and/or a card that works there for little or no fee. ATM's in Europe don't normally ding you for more...

    Use Albergue before getting credential?

If you are arriving late, you might want to find a hotel.

LIVE from the Camino Descent to Roncesvalles

No, you are not over thinking it. The left is fine on a dry, hot day. If it is wet, the leaves that cover the path can be quite slippery. The path to the right is pretty straight forward as far as I am concerned, just keep walking downhill and make sure you are heading in a westerly and...

LIVE from the Camino Descent to Roncesvalles

If you had continued along that route I suspect you would have found yourself in Valcarlos before long.

Volunteering on the Camino with a dog

I would caution you about San Anton because there are feral dogs that like in the adjacent house. They are poorly cared for and sleep in the trees at night.

Where have you felt a deep sense of community on the Camino?

Visiting good friends in Moratinos. Eduardo at Boadilla and the Benedictine albergue Santa Cruz in Sahagun. Spontaneity abound at many places, it just depends on the vibe of the day.

Please, do not consider donativos as cheaper

At San Anton, it was quite disappointing to hear someone drops a few coins in the donativo box. When Ovidio came around to collect the donations to buy our supplies, we would be elated when he showed us a few 20's and 50's. Personally, I think the minimum donation anyone should consider if there...

Albergue for rent in the french way?

Your question is very vague. Do you want to rent and start running an albergue on a full time basis or do you just want to rent one short term? You appear to be Spanish so ownership would not be an issue for you like it would be for an expat. More details might get you a few more responses.
