    Via Francigena guide books

I was attracted by the Heading of this thread and thought I'd plonk this 2 cents in here. Even in this day of electronics I do like a physical guidebook - loved the Brierley for the Frances but he doesn't do one for the VF. 🙁 I'm hoping to have a go at part of the VF next year and have compiled...

Via Francigena KMZ files for Google Earth (Besancon-Rome)

Wow - 2000m up - that's like an elevator - I can see the problem. I did have a look at the symptoms etc and rapid elevation increase can be a problem apparently. Will have to look into the "delicious liqueur" you mentioned as well - sounds intriguing !

Via Francigena KMZ files for Google Earth (Besancon-Rome)

So @kiwiDavid I don't know about you but I prefer sunbathing on the way to Rome to building a snowman on Great St Bernard Pass. Absolutely Kat - I have to agree (I'm a summer person) - after reading timr's fantastic post on crossing the Pass it makes me think picking the month/season...

Via Francigena KMZ files for Google Earth (Besancon-Rome)

Hi Kat - I would defer to Harrington's answer as I am still in the planning stage and haven't walked the route yet.It was great to see he thought June was doable as I am looking at around mid to late June for the pass. The problem with that timing is of course that you will hit the heat further...

Via Francigena KMZ files for Google Earth (Besancon-Rome)

Just started planning for the Via Francigena for next year (mid August on) - Besancon to Rome. Have tweaked a few GPX files from the Via Francigena Official site so they can be opened in Google earth (they will leave a red line overlay outlining the Official route on to Google Earth). First...

How many brought a sheet or cover treated with permethrin?

I took a single fitted sheet which I had soaked in pyrethrin (allowed to dry and placed in a plastic bag) and just had my sleeping bag on top.Travelled in August/Sept/Oct - never had any problems with bedbugs.I did note there were a few around though as other people were getting bitten.

Best direction to head from SJdPP: Orisson or Valcarlos?

Loved Orisson for the chance to 'get set' - the dinner and intro - the route itself over the mountain - met people in Finisterre 800kms later who were at the dinner at Orisson - fantastic. That said - in your time frame would not stop at Orisson but head to Valcarlos or straight through to...

Going Slower the Second Time Around

Hi Susan - your post caught my eye as I would like to walk the Camino again one day.I walked SJPP to Finisterre in 2012 over 42 days with a few days off here and there.I generally walked on my own and went to places I thought were of interest (Eunate,Samos,Granon, etc) at my own pace (from 12kms...

    The Camino Obsession

"it's hard to settle back into the"real world " again with the responsibilities that life brings, because let's face it we don't have those responsibilities whilst on the Camino ---only ourselves, and getting from A to B." This rings the bell for me Annette - a truism and an insight. Our steps are...

    Cpap user

Hi Steve - I walked the Camino in 2012 and was in a room with about 8 people at a hostel where one of them was using a CPAP machine.I found it really good because the steady low volume noise of the machine seemed to blank out the snorers - good one !
