Questions about availability of facilities in November.

Most of the luggage transport services end in late October. As far as I know the only regular services in November are on the section of the Frances from Sarria onwards and on the Portugues from Tui.

Valcarlos to Pic de Leizar Atheka?

I have walked the Napoleon twice and the Valcarlos route three times. The Napoleon is more scenic in my opinion but not enough of a difference to make your diversion worthwhile. If you are walking all the way to Santiago there will be other equally scenic sections around the Cruz de Ferro and O...

    Annual September Bed Race

I stayed in a private albergue in Najera last week . A man there had found the municipal full but had no problem finding a bed in the private place. No one I met last week seemed particularly anxious about accommodation.

    Annual September Bed Race

I walked from Logroño to Burgos last week with a friend. We stayed in albergues in Najera, Grañon, Villafranca de Montes de Oca and Cardeñuela Riopico. The first three were all busy but not completely full. The last one was very quiet indeed - only 5 of us on the night we stayed.

Saint Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles, leaving in the afternoon

For current information and forecasts either Meteoblue or AEMET. For historic trends when planning ahead I find Weatherspark is very useful.

    Civil war memorials

There are at least two mass graves near the monument in the forest on the way to San Juan de Ortega. I passed by there a few days ago. Neither had been excavated at the time of my first and second Camino though they have been since. This is still recent history.

Saint Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles, leaving in the afternoon

Is your 6km/h average over the sort of ascents and descents found on the SJPDP to Roncesvalles routes? Not the same as flat walking in my experience.

    Flood warning?!

@Monasp has just posted about massive damage to the road up to Somport as a result of heavy rain yesterday. On the SJPDP pilgrim office Facebook page. A substantial section of the road destroyed completely. The video is impressive. https://www.facebook.com/share/r/etGkzEbFngsUmnuv/

    The dreaded descent into Zubiri

The man who had to be rescued by helicopter with back injuries on that stretch just two days ago might not share your positive view. https://www.leonoticias.com/comarcas/rescatan-helicoptero-peregrino-anos-herido-molinaseca-20240830211640-nt_amp.html

    Cruz de Ferro

A very similar photo to the 1970s one in the previous post but better resolution. That is pretty much how I remember first seeing the Cruz de Ferro - no trees that I can recall and no major landscaping...

    Weather

Here is the Meteoblue 14 day forecast for SJPDP. Looks pretty much ideal walking conditions for the 6th - not too hot or too cold or too wet!

Pilgrims Behaving Badly - Is the Camino Frances full?

I think @Tincatinker has already named himself after a fish - a greenish freshwater carp-like creature that prefers deep ponds and dark turbid waters. And if the waters are not murky enough they are very good at stirring them up and making things even less clear than they were before....

Pilgrims Behaving Badly - Is the Camino Frances full?

That's an interesting point of view. I'm struggling to see how it might work though. What authority and means do you think the various national Camino associations have to impose any form of control on pilgrims?

Pilgrim arrested over forest fire near Astorga

According to this report the person who was arrested has been released on bail to continue his Camino. https://cadenaser.com/castillayleon/2024/08/23/en-libertad-con-cargos-el-presunto-autor-del-incendio-de-la-maragateria-radio-leon/

Pilgrim arrested over forest fire near Astorga

A follow up article on a Leon website is reporting that the man who was arrested has admitted starting the fires. It seems that he is originally from Germany and is wanted in other countries for other offences though the article gives no further details. A strange complicated story...

Pilgrims Behaving Badly - Is the Camino Frances full?

I think that we often overestimate the value of pilgrims to the local economy. Certainly the villages and towns directly on the main routes have seen benefits and places like Foncebadon or O Cebreiro have been completely transformed. But those benefits have mostly gone to those who provide...

Pilgrim arrested over forest fire near Astorga

A foreign pilgrim has been arrested in Foncebadon in connection with a forest fire yesterday which covered almost 800 hectares of land near Astorga...

    Preparing to sleep rough?

The municipal albergue in Mansilla de las Mulas has now reopened.

6 or 8 days from Burgos to Leon

500km in 7 days? That's a very serious stretch of the legs.

6 or 8 days from Burgos to Leon

I walked the Frances in January last year. It took me 7 days from Burgos to Leon. My overnight stops were Castrojeriz, Fromista, Carrion de los Condes, Moratinos, Bercianos, and Mansilla de las Mulas. I had planned to spend the first night in Hontanas but the hospitalero never turned up to open...
