    Snake identification

Different countries may have different recommended protocols. Here in the UK it is simply recommended that the person bitten remain as still as possible and to elevate the bitten limb when practical until medical help can arrive. Our only venomous snake has venom of quite low toxicity compared...

"What a hardcore thru-hiker can learn on the Camino de Santiago"

I think that would be an official confirmation that the Caminos are no longer to be seen as a pilgrimage to the tomb of the Apostle but are simply a long distance walk without any particular religious significance. If someone wants an explicitly non-religious end point for their journey then of...

"What a hardcore thru-hiker can learn on the Camino de Santiago"

Johnnie Walker tells me that when he was involved in running the pilgrim office he suggested that the cathedral install a KM0 marker somewhere near the cathedral doors as a photo opportunity. The Dean at the time gave him a ticking-off and said that the Apostle's reliquary is and always has been...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

Confession and absolution have not been required to receive a Compostela for at least 34 years to my personal knowledge. And it has certainly not conferred an indulgence either.

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

Sometime between the 1967 Compostela above and my first Camino in 1990. The version I received was superficially similar to that 1967 one posted by @JabbaPapa but without the mention of the sacraments. I believe the current version with the text about the minimum distances dates from 2014 or...

Vigo airport reopens after one month closure

La Voz de Galicia has an article on the reopening of Vigo airport which has been closed for runway repairs. Sometimes a handy alternative to flights to/from Santiago...

"What a hardcore thru-hiker can learn on the Camino de Santiago"

And "end" points. On Facebook quite recently I saw some comment on the proposal to charge for entry to the Obradoiro - on similar lines to a proposal for a tourist charge to enter the Plaza de España in Sevilla. One person objected that it would stop pilgrims from completing their pilgrimages...

    Travel from Santiago to Lisbon

My personal choice would be bus to Porto (ALSA or Flixbus) and train from there. If time was not an issue then train to Vigo, second train to Porto and third train to Lisbon.

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

Saudi Arabia strictly limits the numbers permitted during the Hajj. There is a specific visa required for it and a limited quota is allocated per country in line with their Muslim population. It is very tightly controlled. Many Muslims who would wish to make the Hajj in any given year are unable...

    Injuries, Fatalities Since May

Hard to know what to do about that. There has never been a time when information about the Caminos in particular, walking more generally, weather conditions, physical fitness, navigation or any other relevant topic has been so easily and so freely accessible to all. Some people will always have...

    Injuries, Fatalities Since May

As someone who is now firmly in the "between 60 and 90 years old" bracket I was struck yet again by the great change in the age profile of pilgrims. When I walked my first Camino there were very few pilgrims over the age of 60 and even at 28 I was probably in the upper half of the age range at...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

In order to receive a Compostela at the end of your journey you must now present your collection of sellos on an authorised credencial. Some posts have suggested that many people would not walk a Camino if there was no Compostela at the end or if the conditions for receiving one were made more...

    Injuries, Fatalities Since May

An article appeared overnight on a Navarra news website. Behind a paywall but the introductory paragraph provided some numbers: "Of the 15,063 pilgrims who have passed through Roncesvalles this year, 4,461 were between 60 and 90 years old. In May, two died in 24 hours and the Burguete...

"What a hardcore thru-hiker can learn on the Camino de Santiago"

The Francis Tapon article is still available online. I just read through it again. Although he does list points in favour of the Caminos Tapon's main issue with the Camino is that it is simply not wild and remote enough for his liking. A mismatch between expectation and reality. The Tim Mathis...

    Marching in March

Most albergues, many bars and restaurants will still be closed in March next year. A lot of places only open in Holy Week and next year Easter is quite late - April 20th. That will limit your choice of accommodation and might mean that you have to walk some longer stages than you might want...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

One of the reasons why I no longer ask for a Compostela. It states a lot more than that but as the pilgrim office no longer have any interest in a pilgrim's motives and do not ask about them in practice the Compostela no longer means what it says.

Carrión de los Condes - floral carpet tomorrow

Anyone fortunate enough to be passing through Carrión de los Condes tomorrow is likely to encounter huge crowds and a spectacular sight. The town makes a patterned carpet of flowers up to 2km long for its annual Corpus Christi procession. The ayuntamiento have a number of videos capturing this...

    Snake identification

@Purple Backpack That's a remarkable spotting rate for the Frances. You must be a snake magnet! "huge silver one" sounds like a Montpellier snake - the species I most want to see myself but I'd much rather it hadn't been arguing with a car first. :-(

The case for preserving the descent into Zubiri.

Thank you for such a clear explanation.

Where do ( did ) you walk locally in 2024?

On the way back from the pub. Foxglove. Digitalis purpurea. I saw a lot of it on the Camino Portugues recently. A welcome link with home. A staple of Golden Age detective crime stories though I think Dame Agatha exaggerated its toxic properties a little. :)
