    Washing clothes on CP

I have done that route and washing machines are easy to find. And the cost included soap. Several evenings watching the clothes go round and round, quite meditative. We used the Breezeo soap sheets for hand washing when needed.

CP Coastal - Trail or Not

Walked the coastal in late April '22. Trail runners work fine. Some places I had to step very carefully to keep from getting drifted sand into my shoes, I am rather picky about sand in my shoes, but all was good with the trail runners. Hoka Speedgoat are my choice but whatever works for you.

    Becoming a Pilgrim

Your pilgrim journey started the day you made a decision and started planning. Have a great camino.

    Drink water to keep hydrated

If you have a quality bladder like one from Osprey (IMO) you can fill it and put in a couple table spoons of lemon juice. Set it sit for a couple of hours or even over night in the fridge. Drain, rinse, and you should have dispelled any of the odd plastic taste. This worked for me and I hate...

Gore-Tex or no Gore-tex: Coastal Route September

Frances, the worse rain was between Samos and Santiago. In some places the path was between berms about 6 feet tall with nowhere to go around. I really don't want to think about what was in the "mud" in the agricultural areas

Gore-Tex or no Gore-tex: Coastal Route September

Good advise but we ended up walking in almost 12inch deep water/mud for 20yards at a time. It rained so hard over 10 days I thought we needed snorkles.

Gore-Tex or no Gore-tex: Coastal Route September

Shoe/Sock combinations are very personal. Find a combination that works for you. I would not worry about gortex or the rain. I walked the Porto route as well as the Frances and found that all you need is one puddle that sloshes water over the tops of your shoe opening and no amount of...

    Altus poncho and pack cover?

We walked in October and it rained heavy for 8 days. Used both the pack cover and poncho. Needed both to keep the outer layer of the backpack from getting damp/wet. Water cam not just from rain but also from the moisture generated by walking inside the poncho with no escape. Glad we used both.

LIVE from the Camino Sagalout's One man and his sprogs

We walked Porto to Santiago in late April to early May 2022. It took us 15 days. We walked primarily the coastal route but went north at Caminha to Valenca then crossed the bridge into Tui. It was a fantastic route with friendly people, great scenery, fantastic food and good weather. It was...

    Medication woes

I also take metformin and lisinopril and was wondering how you got them filled in Spain.

    Medication woes

Very similar to what I do, except I laminate all of the prescription "labels" so it is easy to slip into my pack between the water bladder and main compartment. I do transfer all meds to plastic baggies, labeled with what they are that match the prescription documentation and ditch the bottles...

    Gortex or No -Gortex Shoes

You are correct for most of the way. When we walked the CP Coastal in April/May 2022 there were parts of the boardwalk that had sand drifted to the top of the posts holding the rope railings, about 3+ feet in 2 or three areas for about 10 feet in each section. All in all not much. We just...

    Discount train card for pensioners

like so many security checkpoints it is not consistent. Departing from Madrid we only needed to show the digital pictures but departing Santiago they wanted the paper cards, which was easy enough since they just printed them at the ticket counter upon request. So I guess it is determined by...

    Discount train card for pensioners

Of course you must be too young. I know the Renfe site can be a little, shall we say wonky. It doesn't really display in the languages you select since they do seem to post "picture" or PDF content which is never translated so you get some translations on a page and some not. Fortunate for me...

    Discount train card for pensioners

I used my amex at the Renfe site without notifying anyone. Amex doesn't require notification, I spoke with them direct years ago, but Visa and Mastercard like to know where you are traveling. Not sure about the others.

    Discount train card for pensioners

We did get our first card at a train station. We renewed them on line. The link is buried in the Renfe site but this should get you there: Renfe Senior discount information

    Discount train card for pensioners

Odd. I have never had any problems with Renfe accepting my credit cards. Luck of the draw I guess.

    Gortex or No -Gortex Shoes

I am sure you can get as many opinions as there are people. So all I can say is I choose not to wear gortex . My last camino, October 23, I wore Hoka Speedgoat 5 NON gortex. It rained for 7 days straight. I thought I might need fins and snorkel. But after walking through water to my ankles...

    Discount train card for pensioners

Now that you mention it I’m not sure. I had purchased cards a few years ago and renewed them online, after they had expired, but didn’t try to get a brand new card online.
