I think the app will be of little help. For accomodation you will depend on a guidebook. For the German section of the Via Baltica there is a guidebook by Rother Verlag. And there is the guidebook by Bernhard Weber (Via Baltica Verlag) - he has been very influential in creating the route, also... -

Start where we are or walk the extra distance to the edge of Irún?
My Cicerone guide actually lets the Norte start at Irun bus / train station. I think I understand where your idea about the 'outer edge of Irun' may have come from, because The Santiago bridge / river crossing to France is also often referred to a starting point, and it is on the edge of the city.- Marc S.

There is no such thing as an official start... Feeling sympathy though, I remember getting lost on my first day of my Norte as well, for some reason it took me 2 hours to find my way out of Irun town centre - I really have no idea what went wrong. Good points. In fact, I always like to compare forum chat with actual research. Fwiw. According to the 2024 World Happiness Report 2024, the USA is nr 23 on the ranking of world happiest countries (6.7 on average) and Spain as nr 36 (6.4). The world happiest country, of course, remains Finland.- Marc S.

Growing numbers on the Camino Portugues - newspaper article
Maybe on the CP people stay more often in private accomodation instead of albergues. I do not know for a fact, but is an impression I have. See also this quote from the article that the CP attracts many more high-net-worth pilgrims come with tourist packages that organize everything for them- Marc S.

I think I saw it as well. Near Elten, while walking the Nordrheinische Jakobsweg to Koln. Which is on the way to Santiago. :) -

Inviting reflections on the wider costs of walking a Camino
No wonder these numbers (which are relatively favorable about the carbon footprint of travelling by plane) were hard to find. As far as I know there is no listing of all accomodation on the internet. The PDF mentioned contains updates to the guidebook, but it is not a full list of all accomodation. Hello @NickyWalking The excellent post by SYates from 2016 is still very usefull today, there have only been some changes in the accomodation (some Herbergen do not exist anymore, and there are some new ones) but the route description is still more or less valid (no major changes). I walked... -

Thank you for posting. It reflects the Via Regia very well I think & and it brings back good memories. I walked it last year, for a second time actually, that's how much I liked it. May consider a third time, to try the alternative routes you mention ;)
