    Spouse Retreat

Mostly she is looking for a quiet place where she can relax. Community, spiritual, meditation, and a balanced diet (more vegetables!) would all be plusses. But mainly a nice place to hang out. She speaks basic survival Spanish. Language schools are a possibility, but I've heard from others...

    Spouse Retreat

My wife and I are going to Portugal for a couple of weeks this spring, after which I will meet my brother to walk in Spain for another couple of weeks. My wife has physical limitations and can't walk with us. She would like to stay in Spain or Portugal while we are walking and meet with us...

    Norte or Frances

The beautiful scenery between Irun and San Sebastian is on the steeper route (not the easier highway route). I walked (climbed!) that route in mid summer of 2021. Substantial vertical up, but what really did me in was the long, steep downhills. Knees shot, we shifted over to the CF from San...

My Take on the Rain Jacket vs Poncho Debate

I just don't understand the willingness to have and to carry a wet backpack, even if your stuff inside is dry in plastic liners. My pack has never been wet or even damp when using my Altus rain jacket. And I walked for 3 weeks in almost continuous rain and high wind a year ago.

My Take on the Rain Jacket vs Poncho Debate

Just to address a personal pet peeve, the Altus poncho IS NOT A PONCHO! It is a knee length rain jacket that can be expanded to contain a backpack. It opens in the front, you don't have to pull it over your head, you put it on like the rain jacket it is. The poncho designation is strictly a...

My Take on the Rain Jacket vs Poncho Debate

It's confusing, because Altus is called a poncho by the manufacturer, but it's really just a rain jacket that can expand to cover a backpack. Without a backpack, you can wear it unexpanded around town, though admittedly it's not high fashion. But for convenience it is hard to beat. While...

My Take on the Rain Jacket vs Poncho Debate

For classic ponchos I agree, they can be awkward to put on and take off. The Altus "poncho", however, is really not a poncho because it opens in front and is put on like the rain jacket it is. So I guess I fall in the camp of rain jacket people... as long as it's a rain jacket that also covers...

To walk or not to walk - this is the question

How did Alicante fare in the recent disaster? I've heard parts of the Lana incurred some significant damage.

    Lodging

Also, consider that reserving ahead greatly reduces your flexibility. An important part of walking Caminos for me is the freedom to stop where you want if you encounter interesting places or people, or to continue walking if it feels good. There are so few places in modern life where we can be...

Paying a parking ticket in Santiago

I checked on using a wire transfer to pay a Spanish hospital bill I received months later. It was going to cost 50 dollars from my bank in the US.

    New Camino Song

Caution! I wanted to forward a link to a friend and It came up odd. Here it is, minus the https: youtu.be/9tEj6Bhy7bw Note the spelling of youtube, this is a common way hackers use to gain access to your computer. I also went to directly to youtube and searched, but couldn't find the same...

    Ending in Sarria?

We stayed in Melide, Salceda, and Lavacola. But given the crowds/commercialization starting at Sarria, I would get off-stage earlier and avoid it and Portomarin. I also felt Palas de Rei was pretty busy and commercial on a Camino from Leon last year. Just my opinion.

    Ending in Sarria?

If you want to do the Frances all the way, just get off the normal stages. Three years ago, we encountered the conga line starting at Sarria. At Portomarin we taxied ahead 1/2 stage and it was back to meseta level density.

Notes from my Camino Torres Sept 2024 (Sala-Braga)

This is quite excessive behavior indeed. For penance you must walk another Camino. ;)

So was it a happy ending? Was it their water bottle?

Camino Frances calls more strongly than the other caminos

Two CF's, and if I do another I'll stop at Sarria. I loved the Meseta, loved the small towns, loved the community. But from Sarria on it was just too busy and commercial. I'm looking at the Madrid, the Sanabres, or a portion of the VDLP for next.
