Comparing travel times to get to Spain

5 hours from home to Sydney. Overnight in Sydney, flight to Europe. Flight time varies depending on destination and how many changes - usually one but sometimes two, then journey to start of Camino. It generally takes around two days to start of Camino and two days return.

Declining numbers recorded on the Via de la Plata

Mozarabe/VdlP/Sanabres/Fisterra was my first in 2008. I was very unfit when I started from Malaga. By the time I reached Fisterra I had lost 15 kg and was as fit as a butcher's dog. I loved all of it. The lack of infrastructure didn't bother me, probably because I had few expectations. I had...

    Hospedería de San Martín Pinaro

The last time I stayed there I emailed and got some of the days I wanted and booked them. On arrival in SdC I went to reception and got the other days I wanted except the first.

Do you set an “intention” for your Camino?

I agree. Being open to what happens. Seeing things and opportunities you might not normally notice. Being aware of assistance from Mushkil Gusha, the remover of difficulties. The universe is large and you are small, but you ARE an integral part of it all.

Stupidest Thing I’ve Done on The Camino!

I told a group of young Polish men about orujo.

    New Compostela Rules

Are Bed Bugs An Issue? How Do I Avoid Them

I am bug ice cream. I have been bitten in Cairo, Syria, on the Voie de Vezelay, the Frances and twice in Sdc, however most of my caminos have been bug-free. I do nothing to dissuade them, relying (ha ha) on luck.

    Rome to Santiago

Rome to Santiago took me 106 days in 2012. There was not much info then for much of the route, but maybe there is now. It is more expensive than routes purely in Spain. As far as I know it is not a popular route. I think Santiago to Rome is more popular than Rome to Santiago. You could...

Perhaps a Hidden Motivation for Walking the Camino

The way you tell it and the result you got from it makes EST seem a little like the sort of penitential pilgrimage that can be experienced at Lough Derg in Ireland.

Rome to Nice Via Francigena backwards

I have to rely on memory here. The route I took was close to the coast on what I think used to be the Via Augusta, which is now a modern road. It was, for me, boring. There is an alternative route inland and parallel to the coast, which I think is the one Caminka took. I tried this for a...

Worth their weight in gold or 'don't bother' ?

I used a bladder once. The lid broke. I use half litre bottles distributed in my pack where they remain remarkably cool. Usually 2 litres. Some say that storing the bottles inside the pack is a problem: you have to take the pack off to access the bottles. If you have a problem with that...

    Isn't twice enough?

It can be hard to admit to addiction.

Rome to Nice Via Francigena backwards

I walked Rome to Santiago in 2012. I cannot find my "as walked" itinerary, nor my journal. The draft indicates 106 days. Because of the diversity, probably one of the best I have walked. There was a 9 day stretch near Genoa which was not great. I only got lost once. Costs were higher than...

Food on La Meseta beyond abysmal

So do I. Neither have I. So am I. I do, however avoid the pilgrim menu. I have gone from morbidly obese to chubby. Ditto, but heavier. Agreed.

    Bed bugs in Navarrete

I have been bitten on several Caminos and have always found that the hospitaleros were keen to deal with the problem, except once in an hotel in France where they appeared not to know about the "petites betes".

    Bed bugs in Navarrete

I have experienced this in Ponferrada some years ago. I arrived with three others early enough to get a bed in one of the small dorms. One of my friends had bites. A few minutes after settling into the dorm, I spotted a healthy-looking bug trotting across my bed. I caught it and took it to one...

    Traveling with a cello

If you are going to arrange for the instrument to be transported safely, no (?) problem. Otherwise, unless you are prepared to trash the instrument, forget it. I have thought about taking my uilleann pipes on the camino ... for about 15 seconds.

Best Weather App Suggestions with History

I watch the tv news in bars. It isn't always reliable. Same here in OZ. Maybe chicken entrails?

Saint Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles, leaving in the afternoon

The downhill section through the forest in poor light at 6km/hr? Do you have a death wish? You are an experienced runner, not a hiker, so you say. I met a young man in Sarria some years ago who was a very experienced runner, marathons. With a smile on his face he told me this and went on to...
