Question about bringing medicinals to Spain

I walked the Camino in 2015 and had to take insulin with me. I found a product that when kept wet would provide cooling for the insulin, that may work for your drops as well. Just did a quick search and found this product, there are others. https://www.frioinsulincoolingcase.com/ I used...

The mediatization of the Camino and its impacts on the pilgrimage

...to my phone, tells me if my mother has not risen from her nap, which means I can alert a proxy care-giver to go make sure she’s not in an insulin shock (and deliver her a glucose treatment if she is). There are so many tools on phones now that are so much more sophisticated than when Frey...

    Puzzled about sending backpacks ahead

...would be void if I didn't have that stuff with me. I'm always curious about what folks have to do if, like my mum, they have to carry insulin with them. It's very temperature sensitive. But i know insulin-dependent diabetes do go on Camino. Can't ask my mum -- she's not a walker of any...

    Snack Bars made of Oats

Yup .. well aware of that ... but my bars were a good way to use up bananas that had ripened ..and there is enough fibre in them (the bars) to help offset the sugars. Cinnamon has a sweet taste without the sugar ... I eat green bananas normally but, even in the cold, they insist on ripening 🙄

    Snack Bars made of Oats

...surge - but twenty minutes later your blood sugar drops to lower than it was before you had the bar, as your body has released vast amounts of insulin to remove it .. so you have another sugar bar and again and again etc ... So the trick is to go for slow burn - no sugar, rather than fast burn.

Video- How to STOP being a Chubby Pilgrim

...If I snack between breakfast and lunch, even a piece of fruit, again it can wipe out the whole day. Must be all tied in to the release of insulin etc. To illustrate what happens when you go off your program. Yesterday being Saturday and my diet 'day off', lunch was: Whole pan fried trout...

Video- How to STOP being a Chubby Pilgrim

Oddly enough - me too last night. I'd had my 600 calories but then got the munchies in a big way and caved in. Not beating myself up about it though - back on the diet again today.

Video- How to STOP being a Chubby Pilgrim

Well done, Robo! There is no t at the end of your name. I can just taste your menu! Today, a vegetarian haggis is on our menu. McSweens of Edinburgh. No chips, but yes, turnip. A sister in law follows a similar regime, she calls it a different approach to eating, not a diet. She will...

Video- How to STOP being a Chubby Pilgrim

...Work further research I'm sure. I just stick to water, so I'm not consuming anything with a calorie in it that might 'trigger' all that insulin and digestion mumbo jumbo. Quite used to it now and don't really feel hungry in the evenings. Though last night, I had one of those really bad...

While Waiting to Walk - What are you doing?

Yes @Robo, you're spot on; mindset is absolutely key. Once I 'flip the switch' off I go, but the last 18 months (since I returned home from the VF actually..), flipping it is the problem! My next adventure is usually what gets me back on track after any post-walk weight gain but with no big...

While Waiting to Walk - What are you doing?

...only thing I have found that works for me. My regime is no food between 4 pm and 8 or 9 am. Nothing! Nada. Only water. It's all to do with insulin, the liver and making the body use fat stores for energy during the fasting period each day. I got up to 103.5 kgs or 228 lbs ! (5' 7" or 172...

    Confessions of a Fat Pilgrim

...to change anyway, and I needed some change too. The great idea is to get your system to accept burning your own lunch packet i e belly fat. Insulin caused by too much carh build fat depots int of burning your own store first.. I am 3 weeks in now and have lost 8 kilos already, 40 days in...

    Body weight. Who cares?

...carbohydrate in the foods you quote. These carbohydrates are very quickly converted to glucose and many are then stored as fats assisted by insulin so you don't lose weight. A diet low in carbohydrates means that your body will start to use the stored fats to produce ketones which are...

    Body weight. Who cares?

I don't really like sugary breakfasts much, and I like to walk for an hour or two before I eat my first meal, which is usually a slice of tortilla and some fresh orange juice. Occasionally I will be tempted by a chocolate napolitana. I have lost between 5-8 pounds on each of my Caminos.

    Body weight. Who cares?

...thing anyone can do is avoid the sugary Spanish breakfasts. White bread, jam, croissants, orange juice and sweet coffee will spike your insulin levels first thing in the day, meaning that you won't have access to those fat reserves on your body. The insulin puts your body into "glucose...

    Companies that transport bags

If I was insulin dependent I don’t think I’d let it out of my sight let alone stick it in a van and send it to a destination I hadn’t verified. We all make our own risk assessments and exercise our choices. A member of a vulnerable group has chosen to go hiking in Spain in the middle of an...

    Companies that transport bags

To be fair, it seems to me Jacotrans saying "just deal with it" when the luggage transported contained essential medications (insulin) was a bit harsh. While the country as a whole may have other important issues to deal with than a pilgrim left far from his medication, I'm not sure what a...

    Companies that transport bags

...to the hotel opposite that was open they took my bag 20k to the next stop and then didn’t tell me!!! When I asked them to bring my bag and my insulin back they basically just told me to deal with it. They are cowboys with a very simple job that shouldn’t ever go wrong but when it does they...
