    Status of the Cowboy Bar

I wrote a little poem last night inspired by this post, and by some comments I'd seen elsewhere: COWBOY BAR The guy online confessed his sin of never darkening the door, because he thought it more a theme best suited to a Texan place. As so the Cowboy Bar was skipped, a waypost in El Ganso...

COVID The situation in Spain/Portugal as of July 8th, 2021

I’d add a third: the patience of (most) hospitaleros…

    Ticks and Shorts

I carry this aluminum tick remover with me. Found it in a Canadian outdoors store years ago, though it’s a US product (“UST Tick Wrangler”). The gradations let you measure the withdrawn tick so that you can report it to health authorities accurately. Works best on legs and open spots. Not so...

    First Camino

You may be solo at the start, but I bet you’ll be part of a lively group by the time you enter the Praza do Obradoiro. Enjoy your Camino!

OBSOLETE COVID THREAD PCR test for crossing from Spain by bus or taxi to France for SJPP?

More heat than light in these fraught times, in life and on The Forum. But, to add one little note of encouragement: starting the CF in Roncesvalles represents a lovely choice. It’s no less stunning visually and challenging physically than starting in SJPdeP. And if you can arrive in Ronc in...

    Camino Portugues in May 2.021.

    Brilliant! Thanks for the inspiration.

    Vasque boots

On my first C I wore Vasques and continue to enjoy the boots. I can see why the OP found them challenging: mine took some breaking in, and I needed to dress an inside seam to prevent a blister. Overall they served me well, and each time I don my boots I receive a pleasant Camino shiver.

What was the thing you were most happy to lose on the Camino?

I lost two things on my first C. First, in an albergue in Rabanal, I forgot the Swiss Army pocket knife that my late father had gifted to me. I lamented the loss for several days, and then walked to/up O'Cebreiro with a German pilgrim who donated his extra knife to me. It contained just a...

Winter Camino Francés video (arrived January 6th, 2021)

David: Thanks for the video which offered many pleasant memories. And, speaking as a parent, thanks for keeping in touch with your mom while you were on your Camino; she clearly raised a strong, confident and courteous son. While I concur with some of the commenters, I admire the way you...

Explain your forum Avatar (name and picture).

Great thread. Just the right amount of bonhomie and solipsism :). My avatar is the lead character in my favourite book, "Fifth Business" by Robertson Davies, the first in what's known as "The Deptford Trilogy". It's a Canadian classic, about Dunstan "Dunny" Ramsay, who the book jacket notes is...

LIVE from the Camino ...laughing all "The Way"...

God love you, Ginnie! You're the only one who's known DR, or Davies for that matter. 5th biz is my favourite book, and Dunny is my fave character. Given the plethora of saints on the CF I felt his was an appropriate avatar.

LIVE from the Camino ...laughing all "The Way"...

"Oh the weather on the Camino Is great for all that we know. But three weeks of sun were for show... Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow..." Yes. Snow. Between Bercianos del Real Camino and El Burgo Ranero. Not in the Pyrenees. On the meseta. And, despite three weeks of mainly glorious...

    Journal Question

I always use unlined Moleskins which I post home as I go. But, lying here on my bed in a Nájera albergue, I confess I had great intentions of filling reams of notebooks on the CF, but have only made a few notes. After showering, laundry, cooking/eating and Mass/prayer, I haven't found lotsa time...

    Starting My First Camino

But would it fit in my backpack...?

My colleagues at my university communications department honoured me with this custom cake on Friday at our staff meeting. I did not want to cut into such a beautiful gift, but finally relented (and ate the bottom half of the pilgrim on the right). I start my pilgrimage on April 5, buoyed by the...

Natural History Along the Camino Frances

I concur with the kudos of The Pilgrimage Road to Santiago. Lovely, dense, filled with detailed "raphic" descriptions (geog and hagiog). Also, for this former farm boy, lovely bits about the crops and vedge along the way. Wish that I could carry it with me, but then I'd need a truss as well as...

Paris - Bayonne in July 2017: 3 hours 47 minutes

The U.K version of the Voyages SNCF states that tix can be purchased three months in advance; six months en advance for the Eurostar only (Belgium etc.). Also the idtgv only offers tix from/for certain destinations; doesn't seem to include CDG/Roissy airport, for one.

    Happy Christmas.

From cool and cloudy Toronto, the very deepest of good tidings to Ivar, to the moderators, and indeed to all Foruminators. May those new boots, packs and maps you got for Christmas serve you well!

    Best Spanish language apps

I want to include some Spanish language prep in my pre-Camino. Any reccos of iPhone apps? FYI, I speak some Canadian French and took two years of high school Spanish back when 'los dinosaurios' ruled the earth. But now "soy" to me is a beverage not a conjugation of the verb "Ser"....
