How very, very saddening - from today's (21 Aug) The Times of London:
Pilgrims behaving badly set Spanish hillside ablaze and steal lettuce
The Camino de Santiago holy route to Compostela has been desecrated by mass tourism, say locals, with one traveller arrested for starting a wildfire
new...
https://inews.co.uk/news/world/tourists-spanish-city-face-backlash-2952834?ito=copy-link_share_article-top the last few seasons I've been walking the VdlP and if this report is only half true, it's better to travel hopefully than to arrive
Has anyone ever stayed with the monks at Samos (as opposed to the monastery's pilgrim albergue)? Always thought it would be a wonderful place for a retreat from the world.
Used to walk with one pole, saw lots of folk waving two poles around like wands, then saw this excellent YouTube clip about how to use two poles and am now totally converted to two, carbon fibre poles
And here's a story (today 24 October) about Russian fake-news bedbugs in France.
I read that, after the bites of bedbugs themselves, the second most common symptom is the paranoia and neurosis that the fear of bedbugs causes amongst hospitaleros, caminantes and periodistas. No mention of...
It's not just the BBC or Daily Telegraph, there's something of a scare campaign running all across the media. All I can say is that i have been lucky - so far - and in more than ten years of walking the camino inc time as an hospitalero (where we used to steam clean, hot wash, etc on the...
Yes. there was a story at the end of 2019/beginning of 2020, posted in a thread here by @Bradypus and @SYates "Local news sites have reported on plans to landscape the area around the Cruz de Ferro and add new toilet facilities and parking area. A project by the local authorities to be funded by...
An interesting discussion, thank you all.
What happened to the scheme I read about a few years ago to landscape the area, build toilets coach parks, and an interpretation centre etc? I think it was going to be funded from outside Spain.
Thank you, CarolamS. I delved into 'To the Field of Stars' today. It's not the book I'm looking for, but you have reminded me of what a good book this is. One of the best. I'll look for the second volume.

I read a book about a Catholic priest who sets out from, I think, Belgium. One of his first sagas is smuggling his new boots into the presbytery - can you help me identify that, please?

If you like seafood and Spanish seafood, you should try the bodegon El Cordobes, on the seafront opposite where the bus stops. IMHO this is the best seafood in this part of Spain. I've been there three times at the end of each Camino (last time in 2019). No menu - eat what's been landed...
Hi, David, it may well have been you! It was c2013. I only stopped to watch and didn't get close enough to distinguish between massages and burst blisters!
Thank you for what you do.
The walls and ceilings of the pilgrims' accommodation at the monastery in Samos are decorated with wall paintings.
Does anyone have photos which they could kindly share?
Are the paintings old (medieval) or new?
Who is the artist?
Information welcome.
