I thought it would be great if we share music that reminds us of the Camino, ideally with a sentence about why it matters to you. This song, apart of the beautiful hunting voice that let's me 'see' the landscapes of the Camino, the lyrics also describe perfectly, for me, what being a pilgrim means.

I can’t resist sharing this clip of Spanish singer Rocío Dúrcal singing 3 Jotas in one of her movies ( I think it was “Acompáñame”), the first one from Navarra, the two others from Aragón. The Navarra one sings about having planted a flower “en los montes de Navarra” (in the mountains of Navarra). Rocío was my very first love, I had a serious crush on her as a kid, back in the 1960s, when she released many movies. I was around age 9. So, as I was going through the mountains of Navarra, I was singing this in my head (and sometimes aloud when no one was around). Although I didn’t go through Aragon, I’m impressed not just by the music and her vocal acrobatics, but also by the challenging dancing.

Sharing this video of the last concert of Canadian violinist Oliver Schroer, held in Trinity-St Paul's Church in Toronto, June 5, 2008. He talks about his 2004 camino and plays 'Silence at the Heart of Things' from his beautiful album Camino. Oliver passed away 28 days later after a 16 month struggle with leukemia. He was a wonderful man. This album was gifted to me shortly before my first camino.

Mine is “Ride On” by Christy Moore. I was at 13th Century Ermita de St. Nicholas, the isolated old monestery albergue after Castrojeriz, lazing the afternoon away. A young singer sat outside in front playing his guitar and singing “Ride On” over and over. In the years since, I have asked many musicians on the Camino to play “Ride On” for me and have never been disappointed. Once a duo at the top of the big hill going down into Hornillos del Camino played a solo concert for me.

Everyone, get yourself a Camino song!

I bought Oliver Schroer's album after my first Camino in 2011. Long my favorite camino music until I was introduced to Carlos Nunez in 2015 or so. Now I enjoy both!

There is a video on YouTube of The Chieftains, Carlos Nuñez and others playing that final medley from the "Santiago" album - "Dublin in Vigo" - on a TV programme. With Irish and Galician dancers. The picture quality is poor but the music and the energy of the audience are superb.

“Vagabundear” by Spanish/Catalan singer Joan Manuel Serrat, this song was very popular during my teen years back in the 1970s. It starts by stating “I’m fed up of being fed up, I’m tired to ask the world why”, and goes on to say from now on you’ll see me wandering (“vagabonding”). Perfect lyrics that I sang a lot during my Camino.

Here's one ...

In 2003, a couple of years after having to drop out of my first Camino attempt, I took Wifey to Europe to show her some of the places I'd been. In St. Jean Pied de Port in the evening, the most haunting choral music was echoing through the streets. We managed to track down where it was coming from (one of the gift shops) and bought the CD.

Next morning we drove (slowly) up the first part of the Camino, into the mist, with the CD in the rental car's stereo. Had to turn it off - the tears were making driving hazardous!

I don't remember exactly which track it was - the full album is on both YouTube and Spotify - but quite possibly this one:

Somewhere Along the Way (the Camino Song) by Dan Mullins
Dan Mullins, besides having a very informative podcast on the Camino, has the BEST Camino song that I have heard to date. His song Somewhere Along The Way really captures the essence of the Camino. I invite you to listen to it and you be the judge...
